My latest project is 'Design a way to invigorate an existing local Train station building which will add value to the local community; with explicit focus on generating pride and interest in the railway from the areas resident’s through innovative design which inspires social-interaction in a development that improves people’s lives. Utilising existing structures and resources.

Any advice/idea's etc would be gratefully received...

Go to your local train station and ask people who are waiting for a train what they would do. Incorporating a survey into your work targeting the people who use the facility would get you research kudos from your tutors.

I am an KLC Graduate and did the full year course. I found it a very good foundation in both the ergonomics of design, learning the principles which hold a design together underneath the style, lighting design, space planning, teh legal side of clients & contractor relationships who to brief other professional and how to create great presentation work to have a clients really understand what you are doing. We had access to some of the best designers in the industry, who I still meet and continue to learn from. When you are all working around each other every day for a year or more it can be easy to be "inspired" by other students but KLC doesn't teach you to have a "style", that is something they expect you to have. That doesn't mean every student has it and others aren't influenced by the stronger designers on the course which may be the reason that you felt there was a generic look. The thing I would like to stress the most about the school is that when I graduated 12 years ago, they found me, as well as the rest of my year, an amazing job in a leading design company. People have continued to have strong design careers many not only in the H&G top 100 design companies but many of them now running them. KLC has a strong Alumni association so at any point in your career you can have career advise. There is no short cut into this very competitive industry I'm afraid to say but the right commitment to the training that fits you opens so many doors. There is also more to being a designer than the pretty and KLC prepared me for a career that involves so much. I wish you the best of luck.

They'll never go out of style Tom - NEVER!! Haha! A10) Ohhh I love eclectic style, Maxine, and yes, I mix styles all the time in my own home! I will say, for as easy as it sounds to just throw everything you love into a space, it’s actually one of the hardest looks to do really well – that’s not to discourage you of course because when it all comes together, it’s incredibly satisfying! While it may be tempting to just include everything you like from all different styles together in one space, the resulting feeling will be one of over-stimulation and confusion. So the secret of this seamless integration requires creativity and some self-imposed boundaries. Sticking with a structured colour palette will give the room cohesiveness without making the room flat and uninteresting. Start with a neutral base for your larger pieces, your paint colours and/or your flooring as a means of grounding the space. Pay attention to how pieces relate to one another and how they relate to the room as a whole. One oversized piece is absolutely fine but 3 or 4 will make the room look cluttered and uncomfortable. Despite using mid-century hoop chairs alongside a more traditional chesterfield in my own living room, the backs of the chairs are of similar height to the low-lying sofa back. There is continuity of the eyeline and nothing jars too dramatically. You also want to ensure that when borrowing from different eras, you mix and match throughout the space – having a mid-century console table with art of the same era hanging above it and then a Victorian style fireplace with an ornate mirror in a different part of the room is going to look ‘off’. Take that artwork and hang it above the fireplace instead and perhaps use the more ornate mirror above the console table instead! Hope that helps!

White or pale walls are ok, DOn't feel that the only way to decorate4 is by painitng the walls. Decide if you want white on white scheme, or a pop of colour. If so, cushions and curtains are the way to go. Decide on a colour and stick to it. TRy the 70-20-10 rule where your 70 is white4 (your walls) and 20 is curtqains and cushions and 10 is a secondary colour such as gold or silver for hardwaqre and ornaments and presto you're done.

Hi Naomi, What a great space to work with and some really fab ideas so far! We love the idea of having the gold touches against a bolder, solid colour. What about having a rich, jewel shade of blue or navy to complement, as already suggested? We love the current 'blue' trend at the moment in interiors and just feel that it adds such an elegant and opulent touch to an interior space, especially a bedroom. However, regardless of our opinion we will watch this space keenly and look forward to seeing your finished room! If we can help with any flooring or rugs you might require please get in touch!

I have noticed that lots of small town stations were built with highly decorative features such as brickwork, colonnades, and canopy’s which have fallen into disrepair or been removed (often in the 1960s). Often the priority is now practical considerations such as parking provision which means often there is no landscaping or decoration that would be the norm of other public buildings. Also they were built before cars were available so driving in and parking is often haphazard. They often seem to be foreboding places at night too.

Of course there are examples were none of these things are true such as Kings Cross.

So if I were a resident near a railway station I would hope that any plans increased investment on the site- perhaps bringing in other businesses such as hotels, bars and restaurants to improve the ambiance especially at night- I can think of stations where there are attached but underused buildings that could be connected which in turn could generate increased rail use in the quieter evening which in turn would help improve profitability and eventually rail fares. It occurs to me that if the objective is to also improve local pride then perhaps there should be some civic areas to draw in children (such as rooms that can be used for the Cubs, the Guides the sea cadets etc). Getting children involved with something has been shown to discourage antisocial behaviour towards the area in their later adolescence. Assuming there is room it might even be possible to have a prayer room and build associations with local religious community’s who in turn may be able to offer support for homeless people who also find themselves at stations. Perhaps there are lessons to be learned from Airports and hospitals in this regard.

Given that these are often city centre sites the road traffic would also need to be considered for pedestrians safety- one solution might be to have public transport in one area and private cars in another with traffic lights or roundabouts planned to safely let traffic on to the town centre roads. I would love to see available and reasonably priced parking in safe underground and multi storey car parks with dry walkways to the platforms to help make regular rail travel more affordable.

From an aesthetic point of view I would love to see good quality lighting that is not too harsh. It would also be good if the site could include trees which would soften the buildings and improve noise pollution. It would be good if the platforms, conveniences and waiting rooms were cleaner and better appointed and perhaps dedicated areas for retail or advertising could help pay for these upgrades.

It occurs to me that tannoy announcements are often intelligible as they try to fill the entire complex with news to supplement information that is already on display screens- perhaps the station experience would be better if these announcements were limited to certain areas such as platforms and restrooms.
