Jack and Jill bathroom. Keep it get rid?

Hi all, we currently have a main bathroom with a second door to my daughter's bedroom and debating whether to remove this second door.

This bathroom, although she is only 4, is effectively hers as our bedroom and my other daughters bedrooms both have ensuits. It is however the bathroom guests also use when they stop over.

Should we keep the second door or block it in? Is there any value in keeping it? From a practical point of view the entrance to the bathroom is right outside her bedroom door so hardly makes any difference. So when I say value, I'm probably thinking more in monetary terms or desirability if/when we decide to move

Appreciate your thoughts.

As a 4 year old it makes no difference to her whatsoever. But as a teenage it will be her private en-suite, like her sibling has (all the while there are no guests.) Taking that away isn’t such a great idea in my view.

Getting rid of this door, could mean extra space and/or storage in the bathroom, which we all know how important it is. The layout would be maximised in terms of use, so we would recommend blocking it.

Hello Jackie, Well the thing about cornice or other details such as dado and or even skirting.. There's many ways to address this from complimentary lighter or darker to traditional white/creamier colours. It takes the ceiling into question too as this can also be complimentary to the walls i.e not white (if there's colour) and spatially too, you can create width and or height in how you address these details coupled with the wall treatments. A lot of people will paint the portion above cornice white or a "white" colour and the ceiling to compliment with the cornice a slightly brighter shade of said "white" colour.. It could be any shade of white to cream but you get the idea. With a modern build and you have no pic here, I would say why not leave it if it's not ghastly.. I do though love the two tone wall which has it's roots in period architecture (It can also be done for skirting where there is none) Now coming, as everything does back into current fashion.. Notice I don't say trend.. Can't stand the word and I believe rather than go with trend you should set it.. With what you like as opposed to what everyone else is doing.. So to perhaps inform you best.. Consider the palette you want to use, light and airy or darker and dramatic and take it from there.. I love to work the woodwork into the scheme but of course what you choose will be what works for you and the space.. : ))

I think that Emily has made lots of good points & I'd totally agree about changing the direction of the doors - that way is traditional so as to afford more privacy for the bedroom, but the other direction gives much easier access to the room and better flow. Personally, I'd change the direction of all the bedroom doors and also the existing bathroom door. Secondly, I don't think that the layout you uploaded is really a J&J bathroom, is it? Currently it's designed that there's access to that bathroom from the landing, and not from either bedrooms 3 & 4, which means no necessity for locks that activate 2 doors. This may actually be a good thing though as bedroom 2, for instance, could also access it if the main bathroom was occupied. So, I would think that you need to decide if you want/need a second ensuite bedroom and if so give that bathroom to just one of those bedrooms (or consider the alternative layout that Jonathan suggested). Or, as previously suggested, just switch the sink & door of that bathroom, which would give a better layout in that bathroom - if you leave the shower & toilet where they are - & also mean that you could take that end piece of landing for bedroom 4. Lastly, 785 seems a bit tight for the landing - would you consider stealing a bit of the master bedroom to make it wider? Best of luck with it!

Black or dark grey will look great too,. There are lots primer products that help block the dark stains and varnishes and lots of youtube tutorials on how to paint over dark wood in case you decide to go white. I would agree with Sonia in that you should divide the project up. Maybe forget about the rest of the house and just focus on the fireplace as your only project. Seeing a complete project is always good motivation to complete another. Regarding the burgundy tiles. Although I don't normally recommend painting tiles, if they are in a low "traffic" and low moisture area then painting them is an option. It doesn't look like your fire place is used to light fires? If not, another option is adhesive vinyl tiles, bear with me! We put down wood effect vinyl tiles in the front entrance a while back as a temporary measure. The previous owners had cream coloured carpet! I couldn't stand it, so I used vinyl tiles as a quick cheap solution, but I've been really impressed with how they look and how durable they've been. Now I don't have any plans to change them. They come in so many options from wood to marble to Victorian tile. And best of all its a very DIY'able project, its cheap so if you don't like it just peel them off. They are rigid enough that the grout lines from your tiles wont show through. I've attaced some examples of the many many options available.

Hi Sally, for me, it just looks horrible, you should do as Jonathan suggested, remove the whole thing, reduce the bottom step to a normal depth step and keep it all open, the change will transform your room and will make you feel much more relaxed as it looks so confined. Also, if you decide to keep the glass, the door glass has to be replaced with safety glass to bring it up to current building regs. In which case I would get rid of the panel next to the door using plasterboard and achieve a seamless look, then replace the door with a full length Oak framed frosted glass door for a more modern look.

I have just had the exact same question with our bathroom. The only difference is that our daughter is 17 :) We decided to keep the door as the bathroom is right at the top of the stairs so it just gives her a bit more privacy. As to whether it would affect resale? I don't think it would matter either way, if you already have 2 ensuites then losing one wouldn't be an issue. If your daughter is only 4 and you don't plan on staying until she's a teenager then I would probably block it up.

I would keep it as it is. If your daughter is used to going straight through if she needs the bathroom in the night, it might bother her to leave her bedroom and go into the bathroom a different way. Also, why bother with the extra cost & upheaval of blocking it, replastering the wall in bedroom & bathroom if it works fine as it is? I don’t think it would affect resale but you could try asking a local estate agent what their opinion is.

Is there a way of locking the door between her bedroom and the bathroom when you have guests staying over? If it can be locked so that there are no accidental embarrassing encounters it may be worth keeping but I would suggest to get rid of it as it will give you more wall space for storage/ furniture placement.
