What size lantern window in a 5m x 3m room?

Hello, I’m looking for some advice on what is the right size lantern window. It is for a flat roof kitchen extension which is 5m x 3m. Was originally thinking 3m x 2m but not sure if it needs to be equal, and if 4m x 2m would be better? Any help much appreciated.

I'd probably go with 3m x 1.m to leave an equal gap of 1m all around, and that would be the largest i'd go. It's not an overly large room and I think the roof lantern will dominate it rather than add to it if too large.

Also, look at what's commercially available as off the shelf purchases or you'll pay a lot more for custom sizes.

You also might need to take into account the amount of glazing in relation to brickwork - speak to your architect before you order anything ! As you don’t want to be in breach of planning /building regs !

I've come up with one idea but not knowing exactly where the entrance door is tricky! I also assumed the window shown in the pic was the front of the house. bathroom measurements aren't to scale but allow about 3ft for a loo. The trick will be getting light into the dressing area, you could have a glass door from the bedroom too? I also didn't put the bed under the window as the window looked low but it does only leave you with a corridor of c3.5 ft. I hope it gives you some ideas anyway, am sure a pro will have much better ones!

I agree, you need to speak to your architect. 7m does not sound a lot at all if you want a traditional looking orangery however given the depth of the room, the doors and windows, in theory I doubt you need any type of roof light. My brother built a 8 x 6.5m extension for his kitchen. On the 8m wall he has 5m bifolds and a window either side. He put in 2 lanterns of 3m x 1.8-2m. He designed the extension himself and his one regret of not using an architect isn't he hadn't considered the amount of heat and light that would come through the lanterns. His floor and furniture also started to fade pretty quickly so he recently had UV window film professionally fitted which has helped a lot. His lanterns are motorised. He also has pendant lights fitted in them. He's surrounded by woodland but he has a real issue with flies etc coming through the lanterns. It may also be worth speaking to the architect about lighting if you want a large lantern/s and the fly issue if you want to open the lanterns. There are also different types of glass available with thermal qualities, built in blinds etc which your architect should know all about. Orientation of the room is also key ( his faces south btw) and whether you have large trees/buildings etc blocking light.

Hi all, We're also looking for a set of 3 sliding doors (approx 4450 wide). Obviously we want the thinnest sightline/frames we can afford but the quotes i'm getting are HIGH. 10k+ (+vat) I know there's a supply shortage/pandemic/brexit etc, but if anyone has any recommendations for reasonably priced doors that would be really helpful. (so many companies out there) If you're happy to share prices, that would be great too. Many thanks, a frazzled refurber. @Sonia - where were the doors from in your pic? @kwg kwg - where did you get your doors with the 35mm frames please? - can i ask the cost?

Hello Vinny Eckles, Thanks for your posting. You raise an important question and point out that your new extension is south facing. May I share with you my recent experience of a similar project in south London. For weathrproofing the roofligts will need to be fixed to a pitched roof, probably at least 17 degrees, preferably 22 degrees. You mention overflooking which is relevant to rooflignts as it is with a skylight. I would suggest two rooflights may be better, they will come with integrated blind (for privacey) which can be remotely operated ie, Velux rooflights. With my recent extension, about the same size as yours, i found the book: www.KeithJamesClarke.com very useful. Have a look Case Study C9 – it addresses the issues you raised and shows 2 rooflights, one to the shower room and the other to the lounge/study together with assorted drawings.
