Kitchen design for our new build house
Comments (10)Thanks CreatePerfect for your interest in my project. I have a fairly good idea for the style which will be a painted Shaker kitchen with granite countertops. I also want to incorporate a large island and it's this that is causing me the most trouble! The reason is that on the long run of units on the back wall there will be a range cooker, set slightly out. Which is making it difficult to place where the island should be positioned as it makes the island offset. I think it's because of the shape of the back wall coming inwards next to the bifold doors. It's the lack of symmetry there that I'm struggling with...so this is where I need some inspiration. I would be grateful if you could give me an alternative that doesn't compromise my island! Hope this makes sense?...See MoreKnocking through the old kitchen / diner and Building an extension
Comments (7)I think given the description above I would look at maybe going somewhere between. A pallete of light greys or pale neutrals for the majority of the cabinetry, with a strong feature colour in a selected area. Have you started planning the layout yet? An island or tall pantry or appliance cupboards may be the perfect place to do this. It is amazing how a bold dark tone against a crisp white wall can create the illusion of extra light, adding a bright feel to the space. In terms of the worktop, I think I would look at a reflective surface such as a white quartz, the light reflective surface will help to throw the light coming down from the velux windows back up to the walls. If an island was part of the deisgn I would maybe consider a warmer wood tone for the tops here, depending on your preferred style of cabinetry. With more traditional cabinets oak is an obvious choice (although I like Ash as a less common alternative, with fantastic character). For a more contemporary space walnut or wedge could create some of the contrast you are looking for, and compliment the darker tones in the feature cabinets. Obviously this is a bolder choice, and you may feel more comfortable carrying the same surfaces right through. As a final note if you really do think the area will be a little dark, bear in mind that mushroom tones can often end up looking very brown in subdued lighting, so consider where you want to use them carefully. Hope this is some help. Chester & Morris....See MoreKitchen remodel and build
Comments (12)I can appreciate how very proud you are of your work and so you should be and I'm sorry this isn't what you want to hear, but whilst I can appreciate it would be wonderful for a bit of "theatre" when entertaining guests and how captivated they may be by the lighting display (although I'm not sure it would cut any ice with anyone I know), I'm at a bit of a loss to see how the kitchen would function every day as a working kitchen. I'm not a great fan of style over substance and I simply don't understand the odd, disjointed set up. For me the function of a kitchen is far more important than any amount of feature lighting or statement pieces. It seems the bit with the island, is all for show and the "back kitchen" is rather austere (and if you don't mind me saying) somewhat unappealing and quite grim to work in. Not least because the Cinderella kitchen appears to be poorly laid out with little thought given to function. All that said, if it were done for a client, I'm sure they were delighted with it....See MoreOutdoor Kitchen DIY - Cheap and simple design?
Comments (19)At the risk of being controversial, I wouldn't put very much faith, at ALL, in anything you see on Garden Rescue. Some of what they do is atrocious and will quickly fall apart. On a more constructive note, nobody ever seems to consider including a sink. If you have one it could be very useful fro food preparation as well a little bit of washing up, washing hands etc. I am going to find a stone sink for my garden. I will have it attached to a mains feed but one could have a sink on tank feed with an on demand pump supplying it....See MoreRevolutionary Gardens
