Living room decor ideas

I'm struggling to get my thoughts together on how to redecorate my living room. When we moved in 5 years ago we threw our existing furniture in it and did nothing else so it looks very unloved and a bit soul-less!

Excuse the poor quality photos, I can try again tomorrow in daylight.

The room is very bright as the large window is down to the floor and gets the sun all afternoon. I hate the grey plastic gas fire so it is going. I don't like the current configuration as the room is longer than it is wide and with the fire and tv at the far end it seems to make it even longer. The only thing we have bought so far is ikea cabinets in wood effect with pale grey matt doors. The idea is we will wall mount the tv (probably behind the door, where the pink sofa currently is) and have the cabinets surrounding it. Deeper units along the bottom and shallower round the top. I'd love a grey geometric wallpaper on the back wall (where fire currently is) and I think it would help to bring that wall forward maybe?

Ideally I'd like to choose a sofa next but I keep swinging from one idea to another as I love the traditional and contemporary looks. Our house is 1970s/80s with no 'period' features (except 70s open tread staircase!) and I want this to be our 'grown up' lounge now the kids are past the baby stage. I'm up for something a bit different but most importantly it must have a cosy feel to it. I was originally looking at this in pale grey

but now I think it's too 'safe' and I'm tending towards something in a soft velvet, and not a corner...I saw this today that might work, but in the regular 3 seater, and in a mid grey...

Any thoughts or ideas would be so helpful!

Sofa: a modern and enveloping 2 seat sofa

Hi. What's staying in the room and what's going? What style is the rest of the house as that may help with your design choice? If you're putting units on the pink sofa wall I might just go for units below the tv as it may look a bit busy with the entrance door and I would probably also paint the door in the wall colour. I like the idea of a darker end wall to bring the wall in (you could do the same for the tv wall). I would probably use the geometrics for accessories or even furniture such as coffee table (I think there's a houzz article today on bringing geometrics into the living room!) . I like your current L sofa configuration but with a larger sofa on the tv wall brought in from the wall a few feet which will give a cosy seating arrangement. I do like either sofa, I probably slighter prefer the DFS one as it's on legs. Safe isnt a bad option for a sofa seeing how long you will have it, they can be updated easily with cushions and throws. Why don't you start putting ideas into an ideabook, noting what you like about each room?

THIS IS A REALLY NICE ROOM. I LIKE THE BEAM AND FIREPLACE. IF YOU LIKE WARM AND TRADITIONAL THE WHOLE ROOM COULD HAVE GONE RED, BUT YOU NEED TO USE THE RIGHT RED, I WOULD SUGGEST USING FIRED EARTHS MADDER RED IN ACRYLIC. THE COLOUR HAS A PINK UNDERTONE AND IS SO CLASSY, USING ACRYLIC GIVES A CLASSY SHEEN WHICH REFLECTS LIGHT OFF THE WALLS. I WOULD PAINT THE FIREPLACE WHITE. I WOULD KEEP THE SOFA'S GET LAURA ASHLEY CUSHIONS AND SOME NICE THROWS FROM TK MAXX. I WOULD LAY ENGINEERED LIGHT OAK OR LAMINATE FLOOR, THIS WOULD AGAIN BOUNCE LIGHT. BUY A PRETTY LIGHT FITTING AND PUT FULL LENGTH SHEER CURTAINS AT WINDOW, IKEA HAVE SOME GREAT ONES. PAINT TABLE WHITE. IF YOU DONT WANT RED GO COASTAL COTTAGE WITH A SEA SIDE VIBE WITH BLUE AND WHITES. LAURA ASHLEY COASTAL STYLE WOULD SUIT THE SPACE WITH ANY COLOUR YOU LIKE. The sofas are quite domineering so I think you really need a very bright colour to detract from them slightly. I'd go for either a bright yellow or hot pink and team with white and grey. I've posted a pic from homesthetics as an idea. I'd get a really big piece of modern art above the sofa with yellow and black etc. This one is from art.co.uk as no idea of your style. You need some texture on the floor so a grey rug could work, I'd avoid an all yellow rug given the floor colour. I'd move the small bookcase and have a giant angle poise or similar lamp in either black or grey. Bright yellow patterned cushions on the sofa with a couple of plain grey and maybe even a throw. I would personally paint the kitchen cabinets grey and add yellow accessories and update the floor when you can change it. Maybe try a glass coffee table and add some accessories. Can you post some more pics of the room in light as its difficult to tell if the room would take all grey. I'd also flip the table so it's central with the window and add a big yellow bowl or similar.If you don't like yellow then just change the accent colour but I think it needs to be bright. If you want to go modern I would change the mirror, maybe something with a black frame to work with an accent colour.

Hi. Have you ever considered a real interesting eye catching piece of art work to really brighten up your living area I think a select piece of art would really make the room stand out, add interest and add a great talking point to the room.... Hi Minnie, thanks for your reply. The paint brand is Johnstone's. My wife also thought Brilliant white might be too cold so we are now considering something with a little bit more warmth, possibly a more 'creamy' colour. The living room faces West, the dining room East - the living room gets the sun in the evening. The paneling would be going around the inside edge of the arch, basically an architrave that wraps the sides and the under edge. I have had it suggested to me that we paint the two window walls and the archway in blue as that will link the rooms together whilst ensuring that the colour is visible regardless of which room you are in or where you are sat? The boards will stay exposed though we are sanding them are treating with a light oak coloured varnish. Furniture wise, the sofa is an beige/mocha fleck colour, dining table is 'shabby chic' wooden top with white legs, Coffee table is wood topped with white legs.

Here are some examples of recent projects we've done

To be honest, I don't think there's anything in the lounge we'll be keeping, apart from maybe some art! We're looking at starting from scratch. Your suggestion with the layout minnie is pretty much what I was thinking, a corner sofa, or 2 sofas in same shape, where the current brown sofas are. We've actually already bought the units for the tv and I'm keen to use it all as we don't have much storage for books etc. This is the layout, although the colours are much nicer in real life!

I was planning on painting the door but hadn't thought about wall colour - do you think that would be better than white? I'm planning on replacing the skirtings with deeper, nicer ones.

I'd like to put at least one armchair in front of the window if they fit. I don't think we'll bother getting spotlights as I think it'll be nice with lots of lamps - maybe a tripod one and a couple of table ones? We obviously need a side table and coffee table/nest &footstool and eventually I'd like a piano on the back wall behind the sofa...

Maybe you are right about sticking with the dfs sofa - it's comfy but also grown up. I do like the velour fabric though - do you think an armchair in that fabric would match at all?! I'd like to introduce yellow and maybe teal in the armchairs and/or accessories.

Here is a photo of the lounge in daylight

and this is the wall the units are going on...

I've just opened one of the boxes to get a photo of the cabinet and door colours, it's hard to see but it is a pale grey door with a matt finish...
