Help: ideas for painting hallway and stairs/landing
Comments (3)I agree the grey-green colour is lovely, and it's quite restful so I don't think it would be too much if you wanted to do the whole lot in that colour. Also it would go very nicely with the parquet. However if you want to break it up, you could consider installing a dado rail and have colour under the dado and white/neutral above, or vice versa. You could even install panelling up to dado height. I don't know whether panelling or dado rails are strictly authentic for 1930s, you would have to check that, but I think it would look ok even if not authentic, as long as the style is simple. One more thought, are you going to carpet the stairs? (They look lovely bare but will be very noisy I imagine). If so I would advise choosing carpet first and then paint to go with the carpet - much easier than trying to match carpet to paint!...See MoreHallways/stairs colour- Help!
Comments (14)I’m reluctant to paint the bannisters anything but white and varnish as that’s what they’ve always been and I like the smoothness of hundreds of hands touching them (it’s my grandmothers house and the house my mother was born in...) but am keen to paint the stairs. The bottom stairs currently have FB light blue on them which is nice but I was hoping to go a little darker without darkening too much- maybe Oval Room blue? And my other question is about skirting boards- I’d be inclined to do them white but would that look strange on the stairs if I have painted stairs, white skirtings and then painted walls up to dado height? Thanks again for help... painting really is the hardest bit...!...See MoreLight or darker blue feature wall in hallway?!
Comments (8)Thank you everyone, lots of food for thought @honeypoppet - I never knew this design technique existed, I’m worried it would look a bit too funky for my simple house and I think the radiator would get in the way of the beautiful ombré effect @yasminchopin - I never thought to use a piece of art, I thought to put up pictures but actually the art would bring the colours together. The radiator issue, and now that you’ve mentioned it, it really does stick out like a sore thumb but I could almost see past it with the wall half painted. And the more I stare at it the more it does seem to take away from the balance of the wall even with something hung above it @minnie & grouse - I never thought of that, it would have been a great idea! we’ve just repainted the bannisters from a dark mahogany stained colour to all white, I didn’t think to change the handrails, I might have to see how far time and budget allow as the carpets are going in next week As the walls are half painted I might complete it in a colour just to get a full visual and appease my soul that I took the right decision! then finally decide either way, but please do keep any last minute ideas coming, I’m certainly learning a thing or two along the way...See MoreHelp on deciding on a colour for the hallway!
Comments (5)Have a look at Farrow & Ball Pigeon. It is a mid range green but it can took quite dark in a hall with little light, but in a brighter hall it can look stunning....See MoreNaomi Clarke
