How to decorate around creamy/yellow counters?

Hoping someone detached from this kitchen can help me see the light!
We moved into our house in January 2017 - it's a semi detached house from 1903 that has been extended a number of times (fortunately the people we bought it from had moved the bathroom upstairs and put in an en-suite!) and has a few...quirks!
The kitchen we think was originally a garage or an outbuilding of some kind, it isn't connected to the central heating at all and is extremely cold at this time of year. On the plus side when the last lot of work was done it had a skylight put in, it is also southwest facing so is quite bright.
There is a big range cooker (needs some cosmetic work but is a nice feature otherwise), bespoke cabinets (ALL wood and dovetail joints, beautiful bit of craftsmanship) and proper solid counters - I think they are granite maybe?
We don't have the budget to replace it, and since it's custom built I'm not sure I would want to just rip it out, but it is all a bit....yellow!
Help?
I think I'm going to replace the cooker hood with a black one (that is actually wide enough for the cooker!), we've already replaced the tap...and tidied the clutter.
We'll definitely paint the walls, and hopefully the cabinets, and replace the handles, but I can't work out what colour we can go that wouldn't class with the counter/cooker combo?
Help me people of Houzz, you're my only hope!

5 years agoWow inheriting a hand built kitchen, you lucky thing! My kitchen is cream and I love it. However if cream isn’t your thing how about painting the cupboards a greige like Elephants Breath or Little Greene’s French Gray? I think that would go well with the floor and the worktop. But I do agree with Daisy that a pale green would look good too. Here’s some pics to help you visualise.

Update:- - Moved most of the excess pots now except the ivy ones (but put those in smaller dark grey tubs instead so more discreet). - Getting a price for a new window to match the rest - Have been busy jet-washing the back garden & decking down as we are going to look at removing the big old slabs on the corner decking and putting some large slate black stepping stones around to break up all the "cat litter" ;) ha ha. Then paint the decking grey (just started a thread asking for colour advice on these). So the garage.... HELP turns out there is a paint for the uPVC if I can't replace that large monstrosity that is the fascia board, but I need advice on colours please? Really wish I had had a grey door put in now instead of black but that means the garage will have to be a combo of black & white or all black or leave all white. My wife also thought Brilliant white might be too cold so we are now considering something with a little bit more warmth, possibly a more 'creamy' colour. The living room faces West, the dining room East - the living room gets the sun in the evening. The paneling would be going around the inside edge of the arch, basically an architrave that wraps the sides and the under edge. I have had it suggested to me that we paint the two window walls and the archway in blue as that will link the rooms together whilst ensuring that the colour is visible regardless of which room you are in or where you are sat? The boards will stay exposed though we are sanding them are treating with a light oak coloured varnish. Comments (22)With north facing rooms you have to accept they will never be light and cheerful so it is better to go for warmth of colour with layers of textiles to create an inviting space in which you feel coddled and comforted. Looking at your photos and where you are in your thinking I would use your favoured peachblossom but perhaps zone the dining area back wall and cupboards to the side with the slaked lime to keep the rear of the room lighter and aid the mirror. I notice there is an eating area in the kitchen so how often is the dining table used? If the room is primarily used for sitting then the table could be pushed back releasing more floor space. To tie the two ends of the room together recover the chair seats with a peach/blue/grey patterned linen and dress the table with a runner, decorative bowl or plant/flowers in the same palette. Even if you are not keen on pattern it does hide spills on dining chairs! The aim is to layer up the decoration using plains and patterns without confusing the eye. Your wonderful urn flanked by a pair of bowls or candles on a pale runner would work. The side window is crying out to be dressed and could have a roman blind set in the alcove or a flat pelmet of dramatic shape or proportions to match or complement the dining chair fabric or runner fabric. The window corner would benefit from a standard lamp, perhaps a multi bulb to avoid using the over head lights. If the table goes back slightly the sofa could move to in front of the garden doors with the mirrored console behind. It may be difficult to get power to here for lamps but it is possible to find battery operated ones although they are still very costly but there are realistic wax battery candles (some of which are on remote controls) that could go in a pair of glass storm lanterns to an extra glow to both the dinning and sitting areas. The wooden sideboard could then go on the right hand wall as you look at the garden with two small arm chairs flanking it to provide more seating when needed, another mirror above to catch the evening sun and either a pair of tall lamps or one huge one. The navy chair could be angled in the corner of the doors with the sheep to the window side. The tv console is a bit of a problem as the proportions are slightly out. Just pulling it out of the corner along the wall slightly with a turntable underneath the tv itself for angling may help. Alternatively could the console be used at the dead side or the sofa for books and cups etc? The tv could then go on a small round table in the corner. The space between the doors and sofa needs a large rug to define the space and minimise the wear to the carpet from garden traffic. A large square storage footstool would layer the space whilst giving extra storage. The finishing touches will be throws and cushions to complement the peachblossom walls and navy chair; a navy blue wool/mohair throw for the sofa mirroring colour and adding texture, with cushions in the dining chair fabric along with your velvet ones and one other texture or colour. 5 years agoI would do it in increments. Looking at the first picture, the floor is lovely, it goes with the hue of the worktops and has the right feel. The cupboard doors look too clean and a bit yellowy so I would focus on that. I would white wash all of the walls so the the colour isn't interacting with the cupboard colour and then test paint colours for the cupboards. Something neutral and mid toned would work be worth trying, the hue is down to personal choice. I would go mid to dark though in terms of tone.

Thanks for all your ideas everyone, we bit the bullet and went for the grey! It's not totally finished yet (we still need a new splashback, and blinds) but it makes me so much happier now
