Must I have built in units in my chimney alcoves???
Comments (28)I currently have about 5 large boxes of books in my house and 5 “unused” alcoves so alcove shelving seems an obvious solution to me! What I’m struggling to decide is 1) How far recessed from the alcove the shelves would look best (2cm or more in an alcove that is 30cm deep?), 2) how chunky/thick (top to bottom) the shelves should be and 3) whether to pack the shelves in eg for novels without leaving much space between shelves or make a taller space on the bottom shelf for photos etc? Any ideas please?...See MoreLiving room alcoves and fireplace
Comments (1)It's a lovely room. I think I would just remove the shelves and add a large square piece of art over the fire so that becomes more of a focal point. I had been thinking that you could paint all the alcoves (including tv) in F&B pelt. It would look lovely against the chaise. You could then add contemporary art over the fire with a splash of deep purple or mustard or both. However the ceiling beam is throwing me as I would do that white so it becomes part of the ceiling and without seeing the LHS of the room it may cut that side off. It could work though (?!). It's obviously a very dark colour but you may like it as you want a cosy feel. I might also try moving the chaise away from the cabinet a few inches and angle it a little towards the sofa?...See MoreHelp with painting finish for alcove
Comments (5)I'd spray them, they are really time consuming to do with brush and roller and as they are quite a complex unit, they'd get a better finish with spraying. All sorts of paint can be used as long as it's for wood, so the actual sheen of them would be down to your personal preference, any finish can be sprayed on. As they already have a finish on them, it may just be a case of giving them a very light sand and then adding a different top coat. However, the professional that you choose to do them will i am sure advise as to what they think. If you are going to do it yourself, then go with the brush and small gloss roller approach. You need the brushes for the corners, as a roller won't suffice. Then i'd go for a Dulux Satinwood, for a very durable, flat but slight sheen finish....See MoreHelp please with what to do w/ living room alcove
Comments (10)My first though was to fit a door to the smaller alcove on the right with shelves if needed, for example for the printer, and the other side on the left could take shelving but fit a door at the bottom for hidden storage. It’s something a carpenter could do as I doubt you would get the right sizing off the shelf....See MoreSonia
