Comments (14)Thanks very much for the comments, it is a great blank canvas - we're very lucky, the whole house is in need of renovation and the hallway is central to the house - so it's important we get it off to the right start! What vibe are we after - we have a young family, this is 'the family room' so it needs to be practical, open and welcoming and is at the centre of the home. There's a separate, more formal living room (next year's project!). We want to add light, we like using traditional materials but not necessarily traditionally Victorian (we think of dark, heavy patterns...?). The previous owners had dark oak furniture and the dark red carpet and woodchip - just about everywhere... made it feel gloomy, so we're against that! My idea books - possibly misleading - storage isn't an issue, I was thinking about fitting a bookcase to one of the large blank walls to break the large space up and provide a feature. Thoughts on a colour scheme to compliment the the original coving/doors and then walls would be welcome?! Light, complimentary to the traditional feel but modern... Not sure if that helps! Thanks again!...See MoreHallway or no hallway?
Comments (26)I really like both designs. It is clear, that you have really thought through your design scheme. I love design 2, I would lose the hall. It's a narrow wasted space. This design ( No. 2 ) is perfect for modern living and if you wanted to retain that element of zoning in the family area why not have some element of continuation from the porch wall to the end of that sofa - this could be created by a 2/3 way wall ( just to the end of that sofa )OR use wall panel slats floor to ceiling painted in the same colour as the walls OR go for oak. Enjoy the whole process - your home is your castle! Marian x...See MoreShould I open my kitchen into the hallway?
Comments (24)Hi! I have seen plenty of homes where you walk directly into the kitchen. I don't think this is such a big problem to do, though you do need to think about all the stuff people need to put on and take off usually at the front door and factor that into the design. There are many ways to make that work. Feel free to join my 5 day Get Ready to Redesign Your Home Challenge as this will help you review your home and think about things in a different way. Plus you'll get 5 days of access to me for a daily Q&A. It's a free and no obligation event.
