arte deco cabinet

Hi,

I bought this arte deco style cabinet, very much doubt its an original.

Not quite sure what to do with it. I plan to remove the shelves and replace with glass ones, been looking at cabinets on line so many options, line interior with mirrored glass or line with the wallpaper we have used in lounge, or full glitter paper, or just paint, maybe a grey. Should I paint exterior with a black wood stain, or paint a solid black.

Would welcome any comments. Will load more photos on another post.

Love the idea of the glass shelves, but would leave the oak as oak. You wouldn't be able to stain it unless you sanded it back to bare wood, the only successful way to do that would be to remove the glass, thus, if you wanted it black on the outside I would prime and paint, you would need to give it a light sand, but be careful not to scratch the glass with the sand paper, it's easily done.

Thanks for input , the glass isn't leaded, only tape, (didn't know that when I inquired, but by the time I did see, I had so many ideas in my head, I had to have it) so intend the get the glass replaced and either leaded or etched, with probably the same design as it mirrors the shape of the cabinet.

The cabinet can't stay oak, because it doesn't go with the room or the style of the house , so its either paint or stain.

What would you say to putting mirror tiles on the sides and back of unit, with glass shelves .

I have leaned toward Art Deco lights in my new home, with fabrics designs echoing my favourite design era. Easy to add to and I love to have summer and winter cushions in warmer fabrics to. Hi, The legs we have on a tv unit, was wondering if anybody had seen this style on a website, would that wallpaper look ok in the cabinet. Thats it really. Have a Google for brass sunbursts mirrors, they are typical of Art Deco and come in a huge range of sizes and styles. Beware of so called art deco mirrors cast in brass with a female dancer in the frame, more Art Nouveau and they are mostly poor copies of the originals.

I can't tell from the pics if the shelves are integral to the construction or if they're sitting on supports. If they're set in to the sides you might have to paint them.

One thing is for sure, and that is, that it's in a really bad way, and to successfully paint and restore it, it would need to be stripped down, the shelves preferably removed, and the separate areas sanded and put back together again. It has layers of what are probably oil based paint on it, which will be difficult to get off.

My wife was a restorer for many years and I helped her with hundreds of projects. These things take many, many hours, but it is worth it. It's a lovely cabinet and a great size, so well worth the effort.

Looks like a great project and like MATH says it’ll need a good amount of work. I too would first make certain that the shelves can be removed if you want to put glass ones in. Mirror tiles in the back could look good, but might add extra weight and be tricky to put in. Wallpaper is the easiest option and there lots of great designs, if the back of the cabinet can come off this will make it vastly easier to apply paper. The design on the doors looks great but the tape does not :), you could possibly renew the design with stick on leading, not a professional look I admit but probably better than what is there now. I do like the door handles though... very swish. I’d paint outside the cabinet and door frames solid black and have it really blingy on the inside but that’s my personal choice. Here’s some ideas.
