Can you open the windows whilst the shutters are closed?

I think we should take a leaf out of the European houses more with the use of shutters for ventilation and cooling so like this idea (would also be useful in tropical areas with cyclones as an added protection from flying debri).

Hi Veesha, We have a lovely collection of shutters on our site, which have been featured in magazines such as Period Ideas, Your Home and Period Living magazine, and that's just from the last few months. Shutters will certainly look fab in a modern home and our price is extremely competitive. And the pros: - Our shutters are reinforced with an aluminium core so they last a very very long time - They're water resistant and easy to clean, making them fab for kitchens & bathrooms - They have incredible thermal protection, keeping your energy bills down - They have a discreet bar so you can control the light (one customer said she liked having the slats faced upwards whilst she bathed so she could see the starry sky but no-one could see her) As for the cons, well we can't say we know any. Some people say they stop the light coming in, but with our rotatable slats, this should certainly not be the case. Jan Johnson, I agree. Cooking fumes are always going to be a problem in open-plan living. Extractor fans get fancier but even some experts agree they're not that efficient. And even if they are, they're usually placed over the hob. What about the oven? Most ovens - Agas are an exception - blow the smells straight back into the kitchen. Very nice if you're baking bread or cakes; not so good for roast meat or anything containing onions. Like most things in interior design (flush-faced doors, blocked off Victorian fireplaces, fake-stone chimney breasts, feature walls) open-plan is a fashion. When it falls out of favour, we'll all be putting back the stud walls the previous owners demolished.

I really love your kitchen and think the Crittall doors would work really well. I think 900mms should be fine. Not sure if this is available and likely costly but I would also think about the possibility of having the glass turn obscure at the touch of switch, so that you can really use the 2 rooms separately, if necc. You could also think about using bi folds internally that fold back to one side. Check out this Houzz article where the owner uses Crittall to keep the kitchen separate too. Thanks guys for your input, great to have multiple opinions. I have been convinced the flexibility of closing off the main living room with a sliding door would be valued in the long run. Rear of house will be south west facing, (North Hem). The sunroom (room8) will serve mostly as second living room/Playroom down the line so yes flexibility wins. Gabby great job on the renovation, how wide did you go on the sliding doors. OnePlan, yes i do agree with you by pushing the sunroom further back. We have a ensuite over the sunroom serving a master bedroom initially over the living room. Master bedroom now at the rear so shouldn't be problem. (Bed to be moved to moving sunroom back) Note site was purchased with an initial design which didn't take advantage of the orientation, very little windows at rear. Without having to submit for major design changes, trying to tweek here any there. Back ground images in above would be our first revision. Any further tips with better use of space appreciated.
