Pergola on windy hill

Ive always loved the pergola structure and now considering whether to go ahead with one. Thing is i dont get much sun after 2ish and im on top of hill so it can get extremely windy. I have a view to sea but as it a corner plot, the pergola would be on side of house so its over looked by neighbour. Im also on a budget so keeping cost down by just getting the structure done then I'll do the rest to tidy area up.I think it will be more of an extension to house for me and children to sit and play but then the winds might put me off. Obviously a glass room would be fantastic but my budget doesnt stretch that much. Shall i go ahead? Do you think it will be used area or just wasting my money?

Thanks so much everyone - this has been great. Sorry for the lack of response - been flat out!!!! It must be hard for you American guys to work on such old English designs.... The ideas have gradually culminated into what really would look good on the house. Ourfarmhouse - these are absolutely great ideas, and thanks Everything Beautiful for getting the jist and putting the ideas onto the house image - nothing like seeing an actual design on your own home. We've got an architech working on it, and he's keen on the iron-wrought idea... but we're not sure. Basically toss-up with this and Everything Beautiful's design (2 above). Going with a four-pannel door, but would like to incorporate some glass somewhere! Possibly a panel above with the house name engraved on it?? Victoria - absolutely right...! We don't need to sit outside with the weather.......... say no more! Just wanting something to cover yourself while you're unlocking the door. We've also done a tour of the local areas, and found a couple of porches - amazing what you find right on your doorstep! Will attach pics shortly...

Hello donned2004, Well you could remove all the things from the hearth.. So it has more space.. Hang the mirror and paint the chimney breast a nice colour to bring the fireplace into full focus.. If you wanted to have an even bigger recess.. you could open the fire out up to the sides of the wooden surround.. So taking out the 30's tiles.. Make sure the lintel is in place or doesn't need replacing and keep the surround it's rather nice.. Remove the current tiled hearth if you chose to open it out more.. and install a flat piece of slate.. So then you would have an open brick recess and a lovely iron basket could sit nicely inside for logs! Another idea to continue into the room.. might be to look at painting the woodwork a colour to compliment any wall colours you have.... Some lovely painted floorboards, or parquet or a natural Jute or Coir flooring if you have not already decided upon something.. : ))

We have just purchased what we hope to be our last house. It is a very big plot and we are looking to knock down and get planning for a very large house over 4 floors. (12,000 sq ft). We know what we want internally however our issue lies with the external look and feel. My wife wants classic new build, with pillar entrance, sash box windows with stone cills or surroundings (Surrey Commuter belt!). I like contempory white, modern, square, glass walls, feature cladded walls with balconies (Beverly Hills!) Our compromise is classic at the front contempory at the rear. We need help! Hopeful designjunction will help offer solutions so we can move forward.

Well, I think you need to design the garden with islands of plants and the gravel as a river flowing through is. This is why they have the larger stones, as stepping stones to cross the ‘river’. You could also use Azaleas, very Japanese and they can ope with sunny spots. They need acidic soil. Did you already have Pinus sylvestris? Think that‘ll go very well. But the most important thing is the island structure with the gravel river, I think. So I suggest you’ll lay a rope through your gravel to see where you would like your river to flow and then create a couple of planted islands, some large, some smaller, and go from there. There are creeping plants for sunny spots that can mimic the moss for example. And do see if you can incorporate a water feature. A tub dug into the ground to hold the water with a pump and a rock or bowl on top to pump the water through. Simple, but effective. You only need electricity. Or a sun powered pump.

Maybe you are over thinking this? As long as the structure is well secured, eg corner posts buried 600mm and cemented in, it's going nowhere. DO NOT just bolt it down, bury the posts. By being worried about the wind, are you more concerned about having a roof on it? As long as the roof is well secured I would have thought it ok. Put it this way, I created a makeshift pergola over my fish pond in the middle of a big open space on the side of a windy Welsh hillside, and attached a SAIL shade to it last year... it's still there!

Thanks Rose. Im on a windy welsh hill too. Yes i was concerned that it may blow away but also would i make use of it more than just the patio as it is as we tend not to use the area due to wind or lack of sun. Im thinking that maybe I'll use it more if pergola there with nice seating

The pergola makes it feel more like an outdoor "room", it should also help you not feel so overlooked by neighbours. Last summer we were looking for breezy places OUT of the sun! I put a pergola in a sheltered "pathway" last summer and we barely came indoors.

If you do it right, you could probably make it strong enough to hold some swinging chairs, theres lots of really comfy looking ones out there, no room for one in my path. I'm sure the kids would like a swingy chair or two too.

You'll be buying solar lights for it etc in no time.... it's a big toy.
