Renovating Design Dilemma Living Rooms

What lighting/metal with grey sofa?

Hello,

We are in the process of renovating our living room and have gone for the grey DFS Zinc sofa. We will have a grey feature wall and carpet will be speckled grey. What lighting would go? I really like this, but not sure copper works?

Copper works well with grey and you could add blush for cushions etc. I migt also consider some wood furniture like side tables etc

I’ve a gold side table , similar look to the knoll platner side table with my grey sofa, black also works well

Hi The great thing about grey is that it is a neutral and can be pretty much mixed with anything:-) A few pieces and possibly prints in duck egg, black , a copper lamp or table, and you have your scheme. I have attached a few images below just to show you the diverse range of options and how anything goes. I don't know if your style is contemporary or more relaxed but the same theories apply - Interiors in my opinion look more interesting when things are not too matchy matchy. If you bought a copper/brass influenced, coffee table, lamp, side table, duck egg throw, a couple of cushions with duck egg and maybe white, black or muted green, a vase in teal, black etc. I know you get the idea. It can cost as little or as much as your budget allows and as you find pieces or things you love, they will all fit in beautifully but it will have a lovely relaxed feel. Sorry to not get back before now, decorating myself! OK, so there is definitely a lady there and definitely doesn't want grey walls. With the added information that the curtains are claret with gold streaks, I would say - go for the gold then. Also if you have some pine furniture, this makes total sense. If you look at the photo I included (and sure you can google for others) the floor is golden and wall grey, so just reverse things, wall gold tone and carpet grey. You can get some test pots and try out against the curtains to see if picks up at slight gold, but still goes with the claret and grey. Only trying these out will tell you how light or dark or bright or muted gold to go. I would advise putting two coats on a large piece of paper at least A3 and then taping that to wall, this is better as done on white so shows the true colour tone, plus and you can move it around and even better, not have to paint it out afterwards! Try looking at these samples in different lights at different times of day, with lamps on only, overhead lights only etc. I think you have the basis for a really good scheme. I would agree with adding texture in cushions etc (at later stage) make you can take them back to store and keep tags on until you're absolutely sure, you really need to try stuff in situ to make sure it works in your setting. About white - looks fine in brightly lit spaces in full lighting, like well lit bathrooms and kitchens, not so good in pokey corners or rooms with any shadows at all. Can be very hard and cold, even clinical in many Northern European rooms, especially in winter!

Have you already chosen or bought curtains? If so I would perhaps wait until you have these up, and maybe some artwork and a rug before revisiting the cushions. I think because the sofa has a cushioned top and back it doesn't lend itself so easily to having lots of cushions, maybe a rectangle cushion on the chair and a toning throw with a few different shades in it over one end of the sofa will be enough. Also, whilst a lot a people might recommend firm, overstuffed cushions in most cases, maybe the cushions will sit better if they are slightly less full and more squishy? Just a thought, you'd have to experiment with that.

Thank you for that. Funnily enough I had already sent for Cormar samples as this is the carpet that they are using in the showhouse where we have bought the house which we really like. The colour they have used is Cormar Cambrian Stone. We like this colour and would like to put this throughout the house but worried it won't go with the grey sofas. What do you think ? The sofas won't be arriving until we move in the house in about a months time. The problem I have is I seem to have a sort of 'colour blindness'. I don't mean I am colour blind but I don't have the talent for seeing if the colours go together unless the colour is an accent. am also going for an accent chair in the bay window but am looking at possibly a heather coloured tartan chair with a large footstool/coffee table in a toning colour with cushions with hints of lemon and purple in them. I was thinking of paying for a Laura Ashley interior designer to come in, not so much to buy all the furniture from there, but just to make sure I don't make a serious blunder on the carpet and accent chairs. It would just be a shame to make a mistake on the colour of the carpet.

I think it'll work really well. I have the same sofa (in teal though) and the light fitting you've chosen will suit the style so well :-)
