Hi,
I received my pendant lampshade last week and it the cable is way too long for the height of my ceiling. Is there a way you can adjust the length of cable?

you can get PIR sensors that need batteries and are wirelessly connected to the main control panel so you should only need to provide a power source for the control panel.

A lot of American homes are timber frame, have wooden floors and a cellar/basement. When you go into the basement, typically all of the electrics are run under the floor so it is easy to place a floor socket. If you have wooden floors then running a cable and fitting a flush floor socket would be quite simple. As an alternative, I just found this on Google: http://foter.com/explore/cordless-table-lamps An interesting idea as I make lamps from recycled wood, I hadn't thought of cordless but with modern rechargeable batteries and LEDs it should be quite simple to make.

@Heather sorry - missed your precious post above your image! Yes we have to get someone to make us a framework and the idea was the lights would come down the side of the extractor (hidden) and be strung through from the top of the frame over the seating area. Because the electrician has put them in a different section of the ceiling then we can’t do that anymore so that’s why we have the issue we have :0( They were honestly just useless! Bah. - Re my spider light. Well the one I have for the dining area is huge! LOL. It has 8 arms - all black and a large round ceiling rose (like 8” or something like that) Not very elegant. I did think about trying to stretch it across to the island BUT it’s on a separate switch so it means I would always have to have the main light and island one on at the same time if it did that :0( Had it over a week or so and it’s nice so not sure I can send it back now (plus it has bulbs in it so worried it might break) - I think I will just have to put something In and see what happens when the frame goes in. Just a while off yet. Ha ha Thanks everyone!

How much clearance do I need to give electrical cables when drilling?

I am planning to put up shelves in an alcove using battens attached to the walls on three sides. One side is a chimney breast with a plug socket at the bottom and some redundant switches half way up. I have a cable detecter but want to know how much clearance I should give where the alarm on the detector indicated cables. Also if it isn’t wise to drill into this wall at all what are my other alternatives for holding up that end of the shelf? The house was built in the 1860s so usual advice re building regs is no help in this instance.
