Massive hole in door - fixable with wood filler or not? (Photos)

For 6 months I have been living with a bedroom door with a hole instead of a doorknob. Doorknob was torn out when locking doorknob was faulty and didn't take key.

My plan is to buy wood filler and fill it and install a new door knob.

Is my plan at all feasible or doomed to failure? Any advice welcome.

I'm NOT Handy at all. I haven't ever worked with wood filler before... or installed a door knob.

I don't want to replace the door for a variety of reasons. I don't mind the filler looking mismatched - anything is better than the hole and inability to close the bedroom door fully we are currently living with! The splinters are treacherous!

Rest assured, the new doorknob will be NON locking...

I don't think wood filler is going to help, it's really for small imperfections rather than gaping holes.

I would suggest that you change to a latch type handle, which will then be larger than the big hole you have on the left and cover it enough for the screws to have good wood to grab to.

There will still be a hole on the right when you've screwed the latch in , but you may be able to put some filler on the right after fitting the latch. It's not the right way to do it, but it would suffice if you don't want to buy a new door.

Alternatively, you would need to fill the door with bits of pinned in wood for the filler to grab to and I wouldn't suggest a DIY novice attempt it.

Hello folks! I haven't disappeared, just had whooping cough (yes, seriously!) with a garnish of gastric flu and torn muscles from coughing fits. So that has severely impeded our efforts (hubby's had it too, and it lasts around 3mths so we're not out of the woods yet!) with our new house (which I now describe as semi-derelict before we bought it) and so had no time/mental energy to properly get updated on what's been happening with you guys. Monica, I'm so sorry to hear what u'v been through, with the RTA & the cowboy tiling / wallpapering on top! (& work always picks worst times to intensify - I just started on a Task Force this week, when shd really still be on sick leave). I mean, a marker?! Seriously?! Isn't it common knowledge / common sense to use a lightly applied pencil? Sounds like u r doing best thing by looking at it as a learning experience. Still, he deserves an honest review somewhere. Anyway, onwards and upwards, I'll look at the lounge link when I've finished this post. BTW I LOVE your artwork. Vivacious, bright and deep - is there an insight there? ;-) And RoRo, wow you've got a lot on your plate! We've been so frustrated with being held back on our projects by health, but u have taken on a bigger scale of project altogether, sounds like it's verging on municipal! U guys inspire me. :-) Thinking of starting a thread on our living room, it's the most 'civilised' room of the house so far, but I didn't take the north-facing position into account when I decided on a colour scheme of turquoise, grey and lime. (Doh!) So far I've made some headway on a concept I'm excited by, but it needs some tweaking so it doesn't feel 'cold' with the blue tone of the natural light. Are you up for sharing some of your thoughts on this??? Hope so. :-)

Having enough storage makes a huge difference to a kitchen - we had ours redone in 2015 & we decided on a lot of storage, with the cupboards scribed to the ceiling (no my dust at the top of the units) as well as useable long counter tops that are practical for preparing & cooking. So, a few thoughts on the bathroom. Sorry, it's a bit of a read, but I have tried to keep it as short as possible ;) 1. I would not choose to spray paint the fixings/armatures, mainly as it would not work (or if, be costly), but also because spraying them gold would make your bathroom even more yellow-y; the cool silver tone of the fixings actually sets off the beige somewhat. So what I think you'd want to do is counterbalance the yellow with another colour, as someone else pointed out. This could be in the realm of blue, as it's complimentary to yellow and will balance it. But I think you could also balance the beige-y-ness with more white (or cream), as found in the ceiling. Which leads to the 2nd question. You could have some paneling put round the bath, there are aqua panels and suchlike, but I would advise make sure a really good tradesperson does the job, so you get it expertly done. It does not hurt to get some estimates and opinions in, to get an idea of what it would cost you. This also leads onto - 3. as it really depends on your budget, how much you change in the bathroom. If you are planning long-term, I'd say it's better to spend a bit more and do a proper makeover, but if the expense would not be justified, stick to a few amendmends to make it comfortable for the time being. You could think about changing the bath for a walk-in shower, for instance and have the floor re-tiled, or finished with another material in a light colour, which would free up space and also balance out the surrounding beige. This way you could also have more storage beside the sink area. If you don't want to loose the bath, you could just have the floor done, I'd say that tiling would be prefereable to painting it - or you could lay vinyl or some other flooring; either of the flooring choices should not be massively expensive, as it is only a small area. 4. Handles can be changed, but I could also suggest changing the whole unit. You could also swap the mirror cabinet for a wall-hung mirror, which would alleviate the awkwardness at the sink (I've seen that so many times!) and instead hang a bathroom cupboard next to it - possibly also open shelving. 5. As to 5. that depends what you'd want to use it for and would require a bit more in-depth analysis. 6. See 1. I would recommend very light, neutral colours, accented by some lush green plants - they always make everything look nicer! But it also depends on your personal taste and what colours you like. As mentioned before, blues and teals would work well, look for something cool in tone to counterbalance the warm beige, but also trust your gut feeling if you see something you like the look/feel of, as it will probably be right for you! Sorry I haven't read the comments (too many) but if you are considering keeping them, I'd send them off and get them dipped. If they come back in one piece then go from there. It may be they come back with a lot of damage, some panels may need to come out - but you can always update with fluted glass panels etc. If they come back and were full of filler etc and bad condition then sand, fill, sand again and paint a dark shade. You can make them look beautiful if you want to. It may be they come back in good condition! In which case you can stain and keep natural. I'd probably replace all the hardware though.

If you do manage to solve the ability to put in a new knob in the existing hole then you could consider using a decorative door plate which could cover any remaining holes.

Or ... just throwing honey pots here...

You could add two bevelled wood panels to cover the hole and fix static knobs to those with a roller ball catch.
