how do I seal a newly plastered wall?

I want to keep the plastered effect, so I don’t want to paint it ‘plastered colour’ I just want something to seal it to keep the look the same. Has anyone done this or know how to?

I don't know how but it was done on this Houzz tour with varnish. Presumably you'd want a dead flat finish and maybe even something that breathes. You could try asking a question

Jotun make a water based sealer that works well, although it is on the shiny side of satin if usedbas directed. I have used it very watered down and found that reduces the shine and penetrates better.

Best to try it on a test area first.

These sealers are basically PVA so possibly any PVA glue used very dilute will do a similar job.

I stopped using Dulux because of the wet/dry join visibility. I've found that Johnstones paint doesn't do this, so I'm guessing that it'll show painting new on old. As a thought try a Magic Eraser. I've found these very useful for marks. You can get them now from the £ shops too. Worth a try. It's so annoying when things like this happen. Good luck.

hi just had living room ceiling and walls plastered found a huge tin if dulux barley white could i use it to seal walls prior to painting colour i want? or should it just be white emulsion? watered down?! Thanks!

hi Kate, I think your friends floor was probably constructed using a white portland cement and white sharp sand rather than the normal sand and cement which ends up grey. you can acheive this lighter finish with the described use of materials.. there are a number of general cement sealers that can then be applied to reduce the amount of dusting on the floor. if you leave the floor to dry and then use a diamond floor polisher you can get it very flat and smooth prior to applying the seal of which there are many. stonetech have a few such as bulletproof that will seal the floor and help prevent staining. good luck with the project- the secret is the selection of the aggregate to get the desired finish. best Rowland

When you talk of removing plaster, do you realise that in a modern house like yours the plaster is likely to be a skimming of plaster over plaster board so basically its impossible to just remove the plaster. To take this all back to basics, you need to understand what your house is constructed of - what makes up it’s layers, so to speak - and how its constructed. When you start to get quotes from trades, say an electrician, they will tell you what they want, such as cutting out channels for the trunking, wiring etc. Don’t start taking out everything in your house without taking some advice from a builder. Also remember any builder worth their salt will be busy and don’t pay anyone ANY money up front. they will invoice you for work they have completed. Don’t take the ceilings down or try to get the plaster off until you’ve spoken to a plasterer. Again, plasterers are hard to get hold of as there is so much housebuilding going on and belive me its not a job you can do yourself. (Unless you are a plasterer). Also, as you are a beginnner, you will have plenty to worry about other than the colour of the bricks! If the bricks of neighbouring houses look similar then possibly it’s weathering. As long as the pointing is good, don’t worry. Also bear in mind the shortage of materials and increasing costs when you are planning work. having said all that it is exciting and rewarding to do up one’s home. Good luck and enjoy!!

Polyvine's Decorators Varnish should do this for you. It's available in 'dead flat' finish, which would give the impression that your plaster doesn't have a coating on it. Bear in mind that whatever coating you put on it, it will likely darken the colour of it. Try a small area first to make sure that you are happy with it.

Kwg kwg we just really like the effect. We’ve had the whole of our upstairs re-plastered and each room we’ve painted so far we’ve just thought that we preferred the freshly plastered look! Something different! It’s a wee cottage and the one room that we’ve not painted yet has sloped ceilings, curved areas, and wee nooks and crannies, the plasterer has made such a good job we just don’t want to cover it up!
