Smart Heating Dilemma

We are undertaking quite the project at the moment. We have bought the adjoined semi to ours, it has been empty for 12 years and was basically an an empty shell. We are extending and plan to move into it ourselves when complete.

The extension is almost finished and I am at the moment researching and sourcing everything we need internally.

I'm looking at smart heating systems and in most rooms I think I would like anthracite radiators but all the 'Smart' thermostatic valves seem to be white!

Does anyone know otherwise or had the same dilemma? I may just be looking in the wrong place.

Would love any advice you could give me.

Hi Hannah P Of course we would have to say that the best smart technology to have would be the whole hog! Have everything such as your lighting, blinds, audio visual and even heating all controlled from one place such as an iPad or your smart phone. But it all depends of course on how much of a budget you have to spend and how much you would be comfortable integrating in your home. Are you thinking of investing in some smart technology yourself? Smart technology doesn't have to involve a huge initial outlay as could could perhaps start with something small such as our Q Motion Blinds which can be fully controlled by an app on your smartphone or tablet allowing you to control your blinds as you wish. Currently using Amazon Echo // Alexa and compatible devices without issue, just check that they are supported. For my lights everything is Philips Hue, a little expensive but these work flawlessly via voice control, iPhone/iPad app and I also have the Philips light switches in some rooms (blanking plates to cover main switches in others). For home security I have the Ring alarm and doorbell set (new ones are due this month to replace the first generation so you might get a good deal on the previous generation). Everything just works flawlessly with my Echo Show and iPhone/iPad. For my heating I have Hive, again no issues, app and voice controlled, everything works as it should. I also have an Amazon // App controlled Smart Hoover/Mop, can’t recall the model but once it plots the rooms it’s easy to control via voice or app. There is a higher end model where it empties itself but I don’t have that one. Finally I have Sonos + Alexa setup in the house, using a mix of Echo, Sonos and IKEA speakers around the home, this did take some setting up (mainly because I’m mixing multiple ecosystems) but now I’ve got past the initial teething problems and familiarised myself with the way it all works adding additional speakers or zones is a breeze.

I think the kitchen could be the basis for any style. Your mum could add the style she prefers via a big island, statement breakfast stools/chairs, and open shelf brackets to the left of the window (with objects/books/plants). I have a Nest controller because that is what the plumber recommended and usually fits. I’m not an expert on any of this. My Nest is mounted at the bottom of the stairs. I can control it from that or the App. I have electric underfloor heating in the bathroom. Don’t understand the multizone thing, All my radiators turn on at the same temperature. I had it installed because we have a holiday home and often stay there so it is convenient to turn the heating on remotely on our drive back home so it is warm when we arrive back. I’m hoping it will be energy saving this winter with the expected horrendous price increases.
