Are Mantles easy to clean?

Hi, we are having a kitchen done and would love to have a simple mantle with fitted extractor. However I fry a lot therefore concerned about cleaning.

Should I just stick to stainless steal hood?

Stainless or glass is easy to clean indeed.. But a strong extractor fan should manage most moist and grease (turn it on when still chopping, most people turn them on too late). There are types with an exterior motor, so it won't be too noisy inside.

Thank you,

more worried about cleaning the mantle than the extractor fan! Its going to be made from MDF and then painted.

Stainless steel hood in image keeps things more open & spacious whereas builtin mantle may reduce your worktop space which I would prefer to keep. May I suggest another option in image below - a very simple canopy (may be called something else in kitchen speak) which extractor is fitted into, this can also be fitted with lights as per image. This is a good compromise between both ideas as it is contemporary, still a feature but less obtrusive perhaps as doesn't interfere with light or worktop space? Good luck & would love to see image when completed.

kikiamack, thanks for the input. I hadn't noticed that images had one or the other. I had noticed quite a few of the shelves just looked 'wrong'. I'd never thought of hanging something with the ability to also display things. This is food for thought. I have a weird vintage glass fronted display case with multiple incredibly narrow shelves. Ideal for displaying thimbles or Matchbox cars, neither of which I do. Now I'm wondering if I could create something interesting with it. My previous idea ( before I ran out of money) was to buy some original art from this artist: https://www.georgiacox.com I absolutely love her stuff. I'm still planning to get a print.

I have used ESP. Fab stuff. It’s expensive but a little goes a very long way. A little tricky to use as it’s a watery, slightly milky liquid so follow the instructions. It’s an etching primer so it grabs onto any surface including shiny metal and provides a good tacky layer for the next coat. Prep is everything. As mentioned sugarsoap the surface thoroughly. If possible I would take the doors off their hinges, remove the handles, and work on them flat. Zinsser primer is also just as good. Also found that ordinary matt emulsion works well as an undercoat after primer. Still experimenting using chalk paint as a primer, has worked really well on unfinished pine but yet to test on shiny surfaces. Hope this helps a little. Oh, just a note. Dust is your enemy! Especially if your final finish is oil based (gloss, varnish etc.). After the undercoat I would sand down lightly (400 grit or more) and again in any subsequent layers and use a tack cloth to remove dust (you can get these in Halfords) before applying a layer of paint. This should result in a nice smooth finish.

I'd personally aim to reuse the holes on the left side, so they become the holes on the right of the new position (does that make sense?) That way you only have to worry about covering 2 old holes (one on the bottom and one on top). The top one could definitely work as a hand towel holder for the sink.

Consider a downdraft extractor (you can still have the mantle for looks).
A downdraft extractor is better at capturing rising smells and grease as the fan is closer to the cooking height. They are also quieter.
Furthermore the newest Bora is very easy to get to the filter, remove it and put it in the dishwasher and it is compact so could go in regularly if you want
