What is the cladding please? How is it fixed to the structure?

Hi. The cladding is untreated Siberian Larch. It is fixed with gaps between the vertical slats, onto horizontal battens from behind, these in turn are fixed to vertical battens. Let me know if you want to know more. Richard

What style of kitchen are you going for? I think the less obtrusive way is to plaster and paint to match the walls or cabinets. A dark colour may make it look smaller but would then stand out. Or you could make a feature of it by using the blackboard paint all over, which could be fun for the kids, or adding crown moulding or maybe turn it into a wine rack. I've never seen it but I wonder what it would look like covered in glass or maybe antique glass tiles?! 1m is quite large so personally I'd make a feature of it using brick slips but I'm sure ther are loads of ideas if you go this route

If you look at the 'black band', there are two air bricks in that area, typically they would be just above the oversite (the floor foundation) and a minimum of 6"(150mm) above the outside ground level. So the front garden most likely was higher and has subsequently been graded down to the drive, the garage floor is much lower than the house which is more or less at the same level as the house next door in the photo. As long as a planter feature stays at least two courses lower than the airbricks it would be fine, and would definitely improve the appearance of the windows being too high above the ground. My specs regarding air brick placement might be a little dated as I haven't built in the UK since the '90s and regs may have changed but the age of the house looks about right. The black band is probably what is left of a bituminous painted plinth that used to be common on many houses.

We had this in our last house. The post was extraordinarily useful as it housed plug and ethernet sockets for running stuff on the island, as well as the master heating controller for the house, and extra switch for the island pendant lights (H section steel beam, so lots of room for running cables along two sides of the post). Really did not detract from the kitchen very much at all, and was a lot cheaper than the goal-post steel that would have been required otherwise. I'll try to find a pic. You can also, as others have said, make a feature of it with a round post, or even just the painted steel beam itself for an industrial look.

P.s. I would measure the roofing tiles too given half a chance. So you can assure yourself all colours on the exterior work well together. (Even if a roof tile looks grey to you, it still belongs to one of those hue families,,,,why fight with it when you can harmonise?) 🤓
