is there anyway to make this an actual living room?
We recently added on a large kitchen/diner to our small cottage which freed up the existing kitchen/diner come living room. But I have no idea how to make the old room into a comfortable living space.
There's now 3 doorways, one being the main entrance to the house with no hallway, an open way to the new kitchen, and then a doorway down to the bedrooms. There's an Ikea kallax unit that ideally I wouldn't like to move as it's attached to the wall due to a toddler and hence the fire guard that also won't be moving.
No matter how much rearranging I do I can't work it out. I'm happy to get rid of the old grey couch but as of yet undecided what to get in it's place, need the seating, but the charcoal couch is a new purchase so will be staying.
Any advice at all would be greatly appreciated. The main window is 6ft and looks out on a great view and gets the afternoon/evening sun.

I would opt for a L shaped sofa so it frames the fireplace area and identifies that as the cosy living room space and still allows easy access to a dining table by window. Your built in bench is a good idea to make most of the space, could have 2 either side so means beach can be tucked under table when not in use. Get a beautiful oversized ottoman for costing up by fire and a small side table rather than coffee table to maximise the space and maintain the luxury feel. Comments (3)Just make sure you have thought through it properly. Full glass wall along would mean you couldnt have any furniture at all anywhere along that wall, or at least not the last 80cm of length before the doors. It would make the room much colder - vertical radiators (taking up more wall space), underfloor heating? Just a thought - you have a huge expanse of glass/windows at the moment (way more than the average lounge) and you say you don't feel you get a lot of light in....... not sure if full length doors would make that much of a difference. Comments (1)It’s not a big house and I suspect that if you try to increase the number of rental bedrooms you only invite the student market which may not be your intention. You need to make the decision on your local market- I suspect your research will tell you that either no change will increase the rental potential enough to justify the cost. Or you might conclude two bedrooms with a bathroom each is great for sharing professionals...See More

4 years agolast modified: 4 years agoI'd definitely do what Jonathan has done. I'd also consider doors in to the kitchen so that it's cosier, but that's just personal opinion. Also, change the door, as it doesn't need to be a front door type,.
I would however move the bottom sofa up towards the window to make a walk through behind the sofa if you have room.
