Open plan kitchen diner...incorporating existing chimney breast
Comments (6)Hi there, we deal with this issue on a daily basis, generally we will always try to remove the chimney either to roof space or entirely (including roof stack on main roof). These options do of course involve the party wall and advice and guidance is needed. We do provide our own free PDF advice here. Failing to remove the chimney, you can as you mentioned, have shelving units etc. along that same wall to hide the chimney. Alternatively, you could use the money saved from the removal to purchase a heating system which could be fitted within the existing chimney flue (just a thought!). One piece of advice (hope this isn't out of turn!), your extension beyond the rear of 1500mm internally is a very minimal gain for the expense of the steel work involved in removing the rear wall of your property. We would generally advise against such extensions as you are not gaining enough floor space for the cost of works involved. The only way to save on some of the fabrication/steel costs would be to have a support post where your two large steel beams will meet, this then may impact the open feel you are trying to achieve! If you would like to discuss this further please don't hesitate to get in contact....See MoreWhat to do with our chimney breast?
Comments (9)Hi, I painted the fireplace grey and the same colour as your walls, to show you...My reasoning for painting it the same as your walls is that you will probably have the door in white or possibly another colour, which makes it quite a stand out feature. That's one. And then you will add furniture to the room too, maybe a rug, curtains... so you'll be adding a lot of different colours anyway. So I'd keep the rest fairly calm. And I really don't think that the blue fireplace makes it less of a feature. But there we are. It's up to you :-)...See MoreIdeas on what to do with removed chimney breast overhang
Comments (9)Thanks for the responses all. Yes I think we may opt for rebuilding the chimney breast and leave a larger fireplace opening so that we can put things there. Sarah - our builder suggested making a media unit but we aren't that keen on TV's too! Thanks Ed - yeah I think you are right re the cottage look. Rinq - we would have loved to remove the breast all the way to the ceiling, but it was removed 30 years ago and its not inline with regulations to do it that way now. So building control wouldn't let us disturb what remains and instead instructed us to install the gallows brackets that you see in the photo...See MoreI would love to paint chimney breast wall and 2 alcoves same colour
Comments (7)Remember to look at the aspect of the room, before going for a strong teal colour. It’s extraordinary how different the colours look, depending on whether the room faces north, south, east, or west. And don’t forget nighttime with electric lighting. Also, if your sofa is a deep teal, you could choose a much paler aqua/greeny blue, for your feature walls, and the other walls maybe an even paler shade than those, if your room is light. On the other hand, if the room is a bit gloomy, you could use a contrasting and complementary colour for the feature walls, such as a deep gold, a warm peach, or apricot, or even a warm soft pink (similar, maybe, to F&B’s Setting Plaster or Pink Ground). Depends upon what colours you actually like, as you have to live with it. Teal is basically a blue green, so if not using teal and its paler tones for walls, look for colours that are warm, on the opposite side of the colour wheel....See MoreSonia
