loft paddle stairs

Please can you advise the best option for paddle stairs, either carpet or rubber grips?

I know carpet will look better but I am afraid it will be more slippy as stairs are quite steep.

Thanks for any advice.

Hi Marinela, There are lots of ways of doing this but the obvious issue is that it has to safe for the boys. I have enclosed a few ideas, hope this helps. None of these could be classed as the perfect solution but you can take ideas from each and miix & match. You need to consider the stair construction, the examples shown are in timber but a carpet would be softer and safer for the kids. If you do go for wood I would add some raised metal strips onto the tread to add grip. Here are a few balustrade ideas: I had to add this one in, its fun !!! The colours could be added with a rubber flooring material, lots of grip and will soften the edges. As the kids get older you can carpet over for a more contemporary look. Hi Anna - you could get the thinner ones replaced but this will probably cost you quite a bit especially if it means altering the balustrades. It's quite difficult to notice the difference on the pictures but I can image the newer ones to be bigger than the original posts. Alternatively paint them the same colour and not in high gloss, this will draw less attention to them. If you are brave you could paint them a dark colour to add a bit of drama to your hallway/landing.

Hi You would not need to get rid of the box room, our advice is to check if you would have 2m height clearance and if you do than no need to get rid of the box or open up the space and have it open. Usually prefered option is to keep the box room and have the stairs separate as long there is minimum 2 meters clearance in height from your first step upwards. This can be achieved with a smart design and stairs would not feel steep either. If the light is an issue why not fit a velux or skylight right above the new staircase? it will allow a lot of natural light in the hallway. To go an extra mile you could recess the loft landing by say 15cm too to make the first floor areas more open this will give an illusion of open and not compact space and finally if you are a fan of glass balustrade and how it can maximise compact or any space and allow more natural light have a look at the images. Thanks Sarah, yes I think this would look nice because hopefully it would match the new stairs and I am presuming the rest of the house below having had a quick look under the carpets so would flow into this (we hope to try and use the old floorboards in lower house if possible). Maybe a carpet runner on the stairs below, not sure on the loft stairs yet because it will be open plan.....Anyway our builder (who is also family) is a bit anti floorboards on the loft floor due to difficulty putting down compared to engineered flooring so I would need to go back to him and see what he thinks. Also I am a bit concerned about cost and wear and tear compared to engineered but it must be cheaper than hardwood at least? TIA x
