1m Side Extension - is it worth it ???
Comments (23)We have recently completed a similar project. I am extremely happy with the result, but my advice would be to think about what is your aim. Are you looking to add value to your house to improve the resell value or improve what you have with your budget? Our layout was very similar to yours and we kept a narrow access down the side for bins, bikes etc (90 cm). We were not permitted to build a double height side extension so we only looked at options for single height. The end result is amazing, but involved extensive steel work and complicated construction. It is far more costly than simply knocking down an internal wall to make an open plan living space. If you get as far as employing an architect, I would stress the importance of discussing budget constraints....See MoreUpcycled chest of drawers
Comments (14)Hi Jules. Yes, original handles, they are antique brass I think. They needed a clean up, good tip for cleaning brass is tomato Ketchup! Works a treat. You wouldn’t believe it but that cabinet was covered in mould when I first got it. I’ve not heard of enamel spray adhesion. Is that the spray etching primer? If so that, should work quite well on veneer, probably better as it should provide a more even coverage. Zinsser can be a little tricky to use but two coats and i think it’s fine. I switched to el cheapo chalk paint as a primer tho as it’s cheaper and provides a brilliant adhesion for other paints. Does need a couple of coats and a fine sanding tho. Sorry if I’m hijacking your thread Marion, I’ve got a chest of drawers just like yours and still no idea what to do with them yet:)...See MoreKitchen - upcycle or replace?
Comments (19)Gravel Hill, thank you so much! It is quite reassuring to hear others' experiences with inherited kitchens - never heard of self-opening drawers before, but it could be one of the surprises this kitchen has in place for us :)). As a side thought, I need someone to invent a drawer that closes by itself after 2 minutes of being left open, as even after 12 years of daily nagging, my husband still leaves his socks and undies drawers open... It seems that the general consensus is that we should live with it as it is, see how it goes and then make plans. Really sensible advice... although I'm itching to make changes. Alright, I'll restrain myself to buying a 2 burners induction hob to place in the lower room (so I can safely cook spaghetti). And a tap. And a Quooker! Sorry, but I'm not waiting 6 months for those. As for changing the layout, that is something we will consider too, although we could also extend, and this is what's just outside of the kitchen door:...See MoreIs Farrow & Ball paint worth the money?
Comments (10)After recently splashing out on F&B when B&Q had 3 for 2 on paint and I thought it would be rude to not pass up a chance like that, I have mixed feelings. I've used whatever was on offer before but after painting the rooms I've done my thoughts are: estate emulsion is nice and it definately has better colour tones than the cheap brands but definately don't use it where there is any chance of moisture (tried it in the bathroom and it runs). Don't use it where it will get scuffed e.g. on the stairs where you'll lean against it but in rooms like living rooms & dining rooms it looks great. Where F&B really come into their own (in my humble opinion) is their eggshell for woodwork, furniture etc. It's tough has a lovely finish and the colours are deep and look expensive. We painted a couple of bathroom cabinets and a bath panel in Moles Breath (gotta love the names) and they look great. So kitchen units for example if you want something a bit different I'd I'd definately use but as for everything else, I'm inclined to agree with the majority on here and go for Johnstone's colour matching service, there's generally at least one Johnstones Tradecservice near every major town....See MoreRibena Drinker
