poorly laid floor - help with dispute!
we are in dispute with our builders as the floor has been laid badly. the tiles lifted along the threshold of three doorways. the tiles were lifted and a matting put down. then before the floor was replaced (1 week before) BCT who were supplying the tiles (because they were also found to be defective) went into administration. the builder is now refusing to replace the floor - except with a £2/tile tile.
we are concerned that the fault also lay the floor incorrectly. we have another area that has cracked in a doorway and sounds hollow underneath.
despite this the builder maintains floor is not failing. they will only replace with the closest match on the threshold area. if they replace the floor it's with a really cheap tile.
the house was purchased for £380,000 therefore a £2 tile is not acceptable.
I have attached some photos - which I think shows gaps in the grout under the tile that is still fixed

4 years agoPossibly caused by movement of the floor under the tiles? What are the tiles made of, and what is the sub floor underneath made of - concrete, wooden floorboards?
Just that I had ceramic tiles laid over a mesh over floorboards which the tiler said was fine. Over time the tiles started to crack in places and the grouting began to crumble. The tiler had basically lied to me suggesting mesh would keep the floor level! When we re-did the kitchen we had the floor boarded and porcelain tiles on top. Been down 9 years and no problems whatsoever since then.

Comments (85)Yes that was one of the issues with our place. Narrow corridors, poorly lit. But by rearranging the access to key spaces, blocking some doors and creating a new double width doorway to the principle room, what was a narrow hallway is now integrated and useful. By converting the large loft, we now have a stairwell lit by two velux windows which also throw light into the heart of the building. I saw it in person tonight and while it doesn’t look like it’s fooling anyone as wood, it seems foolish to have it all ripped up (with the additional costs on an already strained budget) and done over to be more staggered. I think once furnished other things will capture the eye in the room and no one will notice it hasn’t been staggered enough. I am just a little disappointed, I know it’s not finished but I wanted it to look beautiful not just ‘okay’ or ’not too bad’. I am am glad I looked at some more grouts, hopefully I can at least get that part right! I am thinking one of these, any thoughts? It’s difficult as all the tiles are slightly lighter or darker so some will stand out no matter which grout we pick. There are existing pipes at the rear; the original separate WC (to be converted along with a cuboard and landing area, into a 4th bedroom) and the bathroom (to be reduced in size so the rear ensuite can be created following a chimney removal). There are no existing pipes for the front ensuite and will have to be laid along joists under a bedroom and out at the side of the house. The plans were drawn up by the architect so I didn't question sizes of rooms at the time as I supposed they would be suitable. Eerospace - I'll drop you an email thanks.
