Where to put Woodburner??
Hello! We are wanting to install a woodburner and potentially have two options:
1. Install in the corner, where the big palm tree is (getting rid of old fireplace and putting TV on the wall there instead). This would mean there would be no fireplace in the room, would this look weird??
2. Or where the current fireplace is now. I'm slightly concerned that it would stick out too much (as we have 2 young children running around!)
Does anyone have any opinions please, what would look best? Would a long room look strange without a fireplace as the focal point?

Comments (19)Hi, yes they're actual flames with all the natural movement and variation you'd expect (and the volume of flames/heat output is controllable with it being gas). When the stove is set up, there are ceramic 'logs' and embers positioned (that do look very realistic) and also some stuff that looks like wire that they call Emberglow. This wiry stuff is near invisible and spread/clumped at the bottom and this causes the flames to vary and lick and dance upwards. We were worried a fake wood burner would look naff and were disappointed when we knew we couldn't have the real thing, but went to see this in action in a showroom and were impressed! Well we have always gone off the opening size of the hole where the fire will go then deduct the space you need to leave all around it and that gives you the max size then of the wood burner you can have. I would advise speaking to a shop that sells them for advice, or your fitter if you have one already. Basically the opening will be set width ways as to what you can have (presuming it’s all closed off at the moment so you can’t measure it?) then I think it’s something like 100mm either side and slightly less at the back you have to allow (don’t quote me!) The depth of the space doesn’t matter so much as if it’s narrow then you can get a wood burner that curves outwards into the room which actually gives off more heat as it’s not lost up the chimney! So firstly, find out roughly the size of the opening you will have. Then look at the sizes of the burners with the wattage you want. Comments (6)Hi Shelly, Woodburner band aside! Mr. Gove must have forgotten that Drax power station uses wood burners!!! Although in the middle of the room, with a double sided option will make for the most dramatic setting. However, it will create a sub-division in an open plan layout. Plus flue could look unsightly, and exit could be a problem. Man about the house has it as we would look to site, as you will need to get flue out to open air. Plus that end of the space will not benefit from cooking and is on external wall too, so will be naturally cooler than the dining end. Placing it at the opposing end, dining, could heat the house better, but a bit of a faff, if you’re relaxing on the sofa. Make sure you get it sized properly, as UFH, not sure if you have it anywhere else or used it before; it heats slower than rads, therefore it’s very convenient to have an alternative heating source for changeable days, where you might only want heat for an hour or so. A good quality burner will start quick. Rather than infill the Drawing Room door, have you considered a pocket door or jib door. Helping the flow of house and stopping that room being under used, plus keeping the natural light level higher. Looking at the layout, have you consider the location of the utility and WC? 4 years agoI don’t think a log burner would look right in that corner where the plant is. But saying that, in Italy fireplaces are often offset in a corner of the room, so what do I know?! The fireplace doesn’t seem to have the depth to take one as you will need to put a flu up the chimney. Is there a proper chimney behind the current fire?
If there is a proper chimney behind it I wonder if removing the fire surround along with the fire and then plastering the wall, apart from where the flu will go, will give a more modern look? Sort of like this:

4 years agoOur small Morso woodburner is in the corner of the living room (ok, it's an open plan, but there are two chunky leftover walls dividing the living and dining, supporting a beam), but it's where the chimney pipe is. So the question is: Where are your pipe options? As a small corner won't look off, but a completely diagonal room crossing pipe would.
No fireplace is fine. Plenty of homes have none.
Would a woodburner insert be an option? Right where the current fireplace is, but slightly towards the right. Make sure your chimney can be used for wood, preferably get a flexible stainless flue inserted, so no smoke can come through old nooks and crannies. (Not sure how these are called in english, as I'm dutch.)

4 years agoThere are other options such as an electric faux wood burner or bio fuel if you feel a real wood burner is not suitable. I have an electric one and fools everybody! Hope you reach a decision soon.

4 years agoWhen we moved in there was no fireplace in our lounge. It did appear featureless so my son,a carpenter, built this false fireplace.We then bought an electric log burner from Chesney. We had the option of having it any colour so chose Farrow and Ball Elephants Breath. Fitted a false flue to make more realistic. Very pleased with the result though rarely use it for heat.
