Outdoor Eating/Entertaining Area

We're looking for a fix-up for this outdoor eating area that is budget friendly.

Currently has a central exposed aggregate concrete area that we use for seating and a side area the same with a horizontal slated trellis back. We were going to build an outdoor fireplace against the solid side fence, which we have concreted already, but looking to put the house on the market shortly and don't want to put this in now but currently use this area for our bbq's. This area is at the front of the house but private from the street. Main living areas of the house look into this outdoor space

Wondering how to fancy this up easily and cost effectively.

Hi - you’ve popped up on the UK thread - but those lovely blue skies look to me like you are further away ??
Lots depend on budget - but if you treat yourselves to garden pieces that dress the area - but will go with you to your new home - that’s probably the best investment.
Be careful putting any heat generating items near to fences !!!!

Hiya.

My immediate impression is that it feels rather open and exposed. A bit like you would be sitting in the middle of a small car park. You need something to make it feel more intimate and softer. Thoughts would include:
- Some sort of quite open pergola or gazebo structure over/around the eating area. If this had climbers on it this would help too
- Some more structural planting/ specimen plants in and around the grass area. This would break it up a bit and make it feel less exposed
- Break up the expanses of fence with shrubs or climbers
- Use of planters for interest and attractive colour
- If you are thinking of putting a fire-pit in then think about how it flows with the rest of the garden, rather than just 'where there is a space'. If you are sitting around a fire pit it is good to have something to look at. Remember that a fire pit you can put a lid on, can also serve as a table at other times.

Fire escape from upper floor ( as this would be a type 3 space ) I can go out onto the roof over the office as that is single storey or from the landing via a new escape type window. Which means I don't need a kitchen door. Closing off the old side door entirely could be a workable idea having read through a few posts here. Putting a partition and door to form a small hallway outside the office is actually a neat idea and effectively completely separates a home based business from the living space as well as offering an 'air lock' to keep weather out.

Thank you - it’s already been dug out and I’ve added a mix of crazy paving down the centre with a large pot in the middle (with a cordyline in) and plum slate chippings for now. I’m really hoping that any bluebells can’t get through the 2 layers of heavy duty weed barrier and the stones, ha ha. If they do then I can just pull the sheets back and remove them. Yes there is a budlea by the canopy and I keep trimming it down so it stays fairly short for now until I find an alternative plant to put there that’s not so tall and likes sun (evergreen preferably) The left side with the large cordyline (seems to be dying off - is this normal in autumn??) has had a good clear out and I’ve also planted a palm and red cordyline type bush along with some other tropical feeling evergreens. Seemed a shame to remove it right now.
