Sliding doors and retaining wall

Hi. We are planning a rear extension with sliding doors. Our garden is relatively small with a slope upwards away from the house. Dues anyone have any ideas/suggestions/photos of how we can manage the retaining wall and not have an awful view! We also do no want to lose too much grass.

I don't know the gradient of your slope but you could consider terracing it. I've attached a few pics for inspiration.

Lots of different options here to provide a really nice connection to the garden ..any potos of the garden / rear wall as this would certainly help

On the up side, it does look like a beautiful house, lucky you. I feel for you with the builder, as we say over here, 'what a berk!'. I'd go for a cedar or composite deck in an aged cedar colouring to blend with the house. I don't know where abouts in the U.S you are, but you need to consider the longevity of real wood versus composite. The composite decks available to you are far greater than they are over here thankfully. Something like the first pic would be a great shape, but silvery grey:- The other pics are more for colour choice.

Hi Justin, thank you for taking the time to reply to our query. It is difficult to compare systems because Deceuninck have not published very much technical information about that specific product on their website, but whilst in general terms uPVC may be able to perform fractionally better for U-values than aluminium (it depends on the system), our experience is that with slide and swing doors the weather rating (water tightness, air permeability and wind loading) tend to be much lower. I would also query the information you were given about security. The reason I say that is I cannot find any reference to their slide & swing doors having been tested to PAS24 standards (Building Regs Doc Q) or Secured by Design award standards. The technology of slide and swing doors is developing quickly, but it is starting from nearly 25 years behind bifold doors so will take some time to catch up - that said they are moving along quickly and in certain circumstances offer an alternative to bifold doors. Depends on the mechanism but if the door doesn’t get scratched or scraped then there’s no reason why wallpaper should either. A problem worth mentioning tho is that the edges of the wallpaper would remain visible. Photo below shows a screen I bodged together from some old wardrobe doors and I wallpapered them both sides, notice the white edges of the paper. Only way I can think of overcoming this is to have the wallpaper slightly inset and paint a border round the edge. I would also use decorators varnish on top of the wallpaper to protect from dirt and and the odd scuff or two. A vinyl decal (wall/door sticker) would definitely work tho, and far easier to apply.

For anyone else reading this thread, you can now get aluminium internal sliding doors either frame or surface fixed. These come fully glazed, in the steel look and even as frameless glass sliding doors. Happy to help with product advice and suppliers if you'd like to get in touch. Hope this helps Kind regards, Nick
