is this pot ok to leave outside in Illinois winter covered on a porch?

I want to buy several but am wondering if they will crack is left on a covered porch in harsher winters.

They are ceramic-made and the glaze responds to temperature changes by contracting in freezing conditions, causing possible crazing and eventually eroding. The pot is not frost proof. Use it at your own risk.

I live in the Scottish Borders and three years ago there was a government incentive to externally insulate the houses. Due to the construction of the houses (poured concrete they couldn’t have cavity wall insulation ) . The difference to the heating bills is unbelievable but the look of the house is fabulous as there was new render put on new window sills and down pipes .i agree with the comment that just doing one house would stand out like a sore thumb but it just takes one to start the ball rolling . Maybe speak to your neighbours and they may want to do the same . All the houses in my street had the cladding and it has transformed the look of the street . I have since revamped my lounge and kitchen. There was nothing wrong with the kitchen cupboards so they where painted ,new work tops and sink . I did have a breakfast bar that took up a lot of room which I have replaced with a glass table . My next project is my bedroom which is getting refitted with new wardrobes and draws . Ex local authority houses are well built and have big rooms , they are worth buying as you can do so much with them ,I have bigger cupboards than the rooms that are in some new builds . This is my kitchen, it is so much lighter and more space . The back board is the same as the work top , so no tiles to grout .

Hi there 81bec. I'm not sure if you've gotten started on the chances to your patch of garden, but if you haven't here are some tips, from someone who also loves low maintenance gardens that are drought proof but look gorgeous all year round..start buy getting rid of the camellia, what ever evergreen is hiding behind it and the red robin..leaving the one plant you actually seem to like, the Cordyline (good choice). Rake away all the gravel and lay down some good compost (after planting, layer over with mulch as it'll stop weeds and retain moisture, resulting in a lower maintenance garden). Next, put a piece of trellis against the side of the porch that currently has the camellia and evergreen and plant a Trachelospermum Jasminoides (Star Jasmine)-it's evergreen, a climber, low maintenance and has dark green leaves in summer with clusters of strongly fragrant white star-shaped flowers and rusty red leaves in winter, lovely. Next, plant a mix of Pennisetum Firework grass and Ox-eye daisies (sometimes called Marguerite) at the back near the wall. In the middle "row" plant a mix of Stipa Tenuissima (Mexican Feather Grass) and Echinacea (purple coneflower) and in the front, maybe either side of a wooden love seat, plant Chasmanthium Latifolium (Spangle grass). All are showstoppers year round, low maintenance, drought proof and do well in sun or semi-shade. The grasses all need the same kind of care once a year, as do the flowers, meaning you only have to do maintenance twice in a year as well as a little watering when it's really dry in exchange for year round interest and beauty that will perfectly compliment the Cordyline. I have white hydrangeas at the moment and love them but they haven't done very well (but it's a different climate where I am just now). Yes, I'll give them another go if they're ok on the edge of the Pennines - the new garden is in the Cairngorms. Perfumed flowers are a nice idea so I'm going to add the mock orange to my plant list. I've succeeded with cornflowers, forget-me-nots and love in the mist but funnily enough never had success with heather. To be honest there's plenty of the natural stuff all around so I'll probably give it a miss. I've a question about tall grasses? How would they cope with the weight of snow? Presently I have bamboo (about 1m tall in pots) and it manages to cope with big dumps of snow but I do shake off whatever snow I can before it freezes and the sun is out. I'm also considering alliums along with the tulips, crocus, snowdrops etc Other plants I'm thinking follow but I'm stuck for ideas for other times of the year. I've grown some of these from seed before and don't mind so much if they fail: roses lupins delphiniums solomon’s seal lily of the valley phlox peony Japanese anemone campanula grannies bonnets foxgloves helibore lilies gladiola dahlia geranium hosta rhododendron foxgloves agapanthus moon daisies canterbury bells

Hi ED, Thanks! Yep the eye of faith is crucial with winter garden makeovers! It'll be loads more plant dominated in a year or two. There's already a pump in the pond, which works as a standalone fountain, but can be adapted to power a cascade on the wall behind. We're having all sorts of whacky ideas like building a 'marble run' style sculpture incorporating all our favourite things, (archaeology, sci fi etc) or a commissioned metal sculpture that looks like a steel version of Virginia creeper.
