Advice to make my cold, plain, open plan space feel warm and inviting!
Comments (32)Hi Catherine, You have a lovely open plan kitchen and lounge, but as you say, it lacks punch and interest. Since you're stuck with the stainless steel kitchen for the time being, you need to work with it and have some fun. A symmetrical arrangement of stainless steel shelves either side of the splash back for the cooker would allow you to put up interesting bottles, plants, china, etc. What about painting this wall a bright colour like Seville Orange from Crown and the other walls in natural white. You could also paint the base of the island in the Seville Orange. In the seating area, use the orange colour and some others like plum or blue-grey in fabric patterns, have cushions made up for the seating area. Also an area rug large enough for the front feet of your sofas and the coffee table to sit on with colour would brighten up this area. It's unfortunate that the TV is blocking a French window. Can it be moved somewhere else, perhaps the bay if the bottom shutters are never opened? Instead of half of the bay window having plantation shutters, I would recommend a second upper row, which could be folded back or, if you don't need coverage for privacy on the upper windows, have an interesting, colourful valance. https://www.google.co.uk/search?q=valance+and+plantation+shutters+for+a+bay+window&biw=1516&bih=839&source=lnms&tbm=isch&sa=X&ved=0CAYQ_AUoAWoVChMIzdu7xO-FyAIVh0gUCh1aigXI&dpr=0.95#tbm=isch&q=valance++for+a+bay+window&imgrc=SjLxqYYGnQmhlM%3A...See MoreAdvice for Open Plan Zoning for Living/Kitchen/Dining Area!!
Comments (32)I'm doing all I can to stop it from crashing but no luck yet! I've lengthened the island from 3.2M to 3.6M to increase the storage for the kitchen but agree the island should be moved down slightly. I'd like a really large seating area but will have a play around to see how I can make this area work better as the settee is a little bit close to the island! I've always wanted a formal seating area and will have the space to do this but may be able to get away with 2 settees rather than the 3 I had my heart set on!! I'd put the TV on that wall so I could see it when I was in the kitchen cooking! But it would be better placed on the other wall for people sat at the Island to see. Your points are so helpful! This is the most productive day I've had in a while!! And I've just watched the George Clarke show 'Ugly House to Lovely House' to see the Crittall windows and I love them!...See MoreIdeas for open plan kitchen with living area
Comments (1)I wonder if you could use the front of the room as a sitting area, mid area as a TV zone - you could place your TV on the wall on the side of the stairs. Then the rear as a kitchen/dining zone. I would be tempted to look at some sort of room divider - maybe a open thru display case between the formal area/TV zone or the TV zone/kitchen area. This should help to create definition between the areas and make the room look bigger too. Comments (22)I think I’m talking about both the perceived feel/look of something and the colour! Like the natural cork colours are both warm to touch and warm in colour, same with many of the engineered wood samples. I went to a really good floor shop last week near me in Stockport and discovered 3 LVT brands that I was quite impressed with; Harvey Maria, Green flor which does an eco floor that looks quite convincing to wood and Project Floors. I have a sample of the HM one but I’m awaiting the other two and then I’ll decide between those and the cork. I do really like the cork but it does also mark easily so I’m now wondering if it would hold up to kids and muddy boots coming in from the garden etc and we did want to use it in the hall and understairs toilet so it would be quite a lot of cork. I agree with you colourhappy that tiles is probably the most suitable flooring out of everything and that it’s can be warm looking, but my partner isn't keen! Typical! I think like Fi Mo we will most likely end up with LVT simply due to practicality reasons, although I am a bit sad not to be going with something natural. I think if I can find the most convincing product possible I can probably live with it...although I’ll probably keep changing my mind until I’m forced to order something, which will be soon!! it’s great to discuss it on here though :) Xx...See Moreukamit
