What colour cabinets go with wooden worktops? Don't say cream!
Comments (38)I just wanted to share my experience because I am on a non existent budget too. I saw a picture of a bench I loved, contacted the carpenter, and he has just made me a birch ply kitchen for a total of 1600 euros, including fitting. (600 labour, 400 fitting, 600 for materials). He has kept his price low for me because he likes the project. I am guaranteed to use him now to build wardrobes, boxes, and shelving solutions as and when I have budget. Sometimes talking to individuals who work for themselves/do it on the side can result in very cost-effective solutions! I am paying 300 euros for brushed stainless steel countertops, and got a belfast sink for 100 euro including the mixer tap. Will send u a pic when it's done but my almost dream kitchen has been possible for like 2000 euros (£1800?) I wouldn't shy away from painting the units yourself as there are many tutorials online to show you how, but it is labour-intensive and eggshell paint on cabinets = drips!! You could always just get white or raw cabinets for now, and paint later when you have some cash? Make sure you use quality brushes if you go this route. Nothing more annoying than little hairs sticking in your lovely paint :-/...See MoreRestoring Victorian balustrade - don't know where to begin! Help!
Comments (13)I agree, there would originally have been just one cast iron spindle per stair. The newel post would have been wooden I think and you'll be able to pick up a new, traditional style pine one from any timber merchant, probably less than £100. It's a shame that the 'bullnoses' have been cut back but if it was all sanded down and painted or varnished to blend in I don't think it would look wrong at all. The alternative is to get a joiner to make up bullnose profile pieces to attach to the end of each tread, but you'd have to paint them as the wood wouldn't match the original. Replacing every tread would cost a fortune. The banister rail will sand down with a bit of hard work and probably be a nice piece of wood underneath that you can varnish. It'll look lovely once it's done, you'll have to post 'after' picture for us!...See Moredon’t like new kitchen - please help with colour schemes!!

Comments (20)Thank you to everyone for your suggestions, from not knowing where to start I've got lots of good ideas ... and would still welcome more. Just so you know the canvas above the glass table in the hallway is actually wired with LED to light up - it's an Arabic scripture reading "God bless this house and those who enter" which was an important feature for us to have ... so I'm afraid it's staying lol! I love the idea of black and white prints going up the staircase ... but it's all starting to look a bit too grey toned in the hallway and would like to inject some colour but at the same time it needs to complement the flash of turquoise in our canvas without clashing .... herein lies the problem for me whereas someone else I'm sure can effortless throw complimenting and colourful accessories in! I tried putting a plant on the glass table and it looked a bit odd to me ... maybe an orchid in a colour that will go with the turquoise ... which will then also have to complement the artwork on the stairs ....!! Dilemmas!!! lol...See MoreMyrna Orozco
