These are architectural lights from one of our trade supplier.

At floor level I think square look good. However if there is a feature you could compliment e.g a window, shape of step or handrail then I would do that to make a cohesive look.

Wireless controlled lights

I've got Phillips Hue wireless lights. They are a standard light bulb that connects wirelessly to a remote control. I've used them because I changed the way two doors hang and didn't want to get an electrician to move the light switches. They've been great. Phillips also do led strip lights that can be remote controlled if you have a box that connects to your modem. You can then control them with your mobile phone. I haven't tried this system so don't know how complex it is to set up.

I went on line and read the data sheet I realised that the front bit is just a frame with polycarbonate sheet in it. Therefore, I wanted to find out if you could just swap the polycarbonate sheet for a different colour or thickness to diffuse the light. Anyhow, the upshot is yes you can - I thought as much, as they use it in light boxes for SAD people - that's seasonal affective disorder not people that are a bit upset. ( Did something similar for the wife ). Try here, they'll cut it to size if you want:- Simply Plastics - You will note that the particular polycarbonate that they are using is fire rated. The size of the outside of your box is 80mm, so buy squares smaller than that. I'd take off the front and see what size you can fit inside. Conversely, you could add extra squares on the outside as long as you use a fire retardant glue / sealant. That would in effect double up the thickness and dull the light down. Obviously the thicker you buy it the more light doesn't get through, so if you've got a 2 or 3mm bit, change it for 5mm. I went as far as to ask on the online chat if this was absolutely ok, which I am sure it is. The lady on line is having it confirmed by the technical team and will email me back with a concrete answer, however, i'm fairly confident that it will be fine.
