Ideas needed for small outdoor terrace

Hello,

We have a small outdoor terrace that we’d like to make more as the weather improves.

Wish list: outdoor seating, low maintenance greenery and privacy from the right hand side.

Any ideas would be most welcome.

Hi Bunnybuns,

Is the whole deck yours or is it just half?

I would give the deck a good wash and then paint it dark grey. If the whole deck is yours then at the far end I would put up a trellis, with a raised garden or water feature. The trellis, I would get a custom piece made from copper (just my preference). Nearer this end I would maybe put down an outdoor rug and some very compact table and chairs. Add a splash of colour with the rug and some cushions. Finally some string lights from the wall on the left to the trellis.

Something like this?

Thank you so much for your input, we’re renting the apartment so have the deck to ourselves. The rest of the outside space is a communal garden for everyone to use.

I really like the idea of the privacy screen and cosy seating area. Will also look at rugs.

Hello Mawlw, Yes storage in a small room can be tricky... If you have files and things... The last thing you want to do is have large pieces of furniture storing things... I would suggest putting a shelf all the way round the top of the wall but far enough from the ceiling height to allow for storing files etc... Paint the shelf white all the way around and even buy white files... Or boxes... that way you can store out of your eye view and still find what you need.. This free's up the space so you can make it appear bigger than it is... If the walls are not partition then you can add more weight just remember the raw plugs!!... Get really good brackets, Ikea do some lovely wooden ones No need to paint those.. I'd say 3 per shelf length of a m2 length & continue all round the walls to the window but not over unless there is the height above.... The other thing is that if you want a stylish office room. Get a good chair and you can get a table and shelf combo that leans up against the wall... See images... One of them is from Houzz! I love them both though... You get more floor space which in turn lends to a tranquil working environment... . : ))

A garden roof or protection of some kind will help you to be able to use the outdoor space throughout the year. In London any outdoor space is at a minimum and a premium so making sure it is usable is a great way of improving both the garden, and the living spaces inside. An automated lovure roof, like Umbris, will allow you to either have the louvre open for a sunny outdoor space, but when it is wet or raining the louvres can be closed to create a fully watertight patio roof to allow you to continue using the outdoor space throughout the seasons here in the UK. Hi Tanya, It may be possible to add a 4th bedroom upstairs but it would be dependant on several factors such as whether or not the property has full permitted development rights or whether it is situated on designated land (conservation area etc...). Even if it did have full permitted development rights to create a two-storey rear extension the depth of the extension (measured from the original rear wall of the property) would be limited to a maximum of 3m. Also you wouldn't be able to build within 2m of the side boundaries if you were building up to two-storey as there is a 3m height limit on the eaves height if you're within 2m of the boundary. Given its a mid-terrace house this would really limit the width of the extension. Hi Ashleigh, It depends on how much work you would like to do on the property. If you are looking to move in the near future, maybe sprucing it up a little might make you feel better. However, creating a hallway cutting through the master bedroom might be an option, it would make the master bedroom smaller however the space would function better, you could close off the door between bathroom and master. meaning no one has to walk through to get to the bathroom. Or maybe if there is room to extend into the back, you would have more space to explore other options. Indoor /outdoor rugs can add a touch of interest too - mixing up your pots into bunches of three and maybe in colours too - rather than keeping them as just a row might be more interesting - and of course you can take those with you when you move . Ikea do divider planters that could give privacy and some cool seating options too !

I agree, as it’s a rental a nice outdoor rug (I have one!) can really pretty Up an area and some nice big pots with, say, a Japanese Maple and some summer bedding like Geraniums in them would add structure and colour. It looks like you have a row of Christmas trees all along the front of the patio (the brown one looks dead) which make your patio a little claustrophobic, so you could trim the tops down to give you some some air and let you at least look out. Nothing too drastic as conifers don’t grow from old wood stems. I would be wary of painting the deck as so many deck paints are not long lasting - I speak from experience.

Thank you, we have some seating now, and couple of planters now, next steps is to invest in an outdoor rug and planters to help define the space. Also looking at adding more plants for a bit more variety and privacy.
