Tall wall in living room
Hi! moving into a new house and wanted to point it first but I am having trouble deciding what to do with a really tall wall in the livibg area and whether to do top to bottom curtains or curtains on lower window.

Wall colour for smallish dark living room
Comments (13)Thanks so much everyone for taking the time to respond. Much appreciated. So I'm kind of stuck with the chaise as it is but could move it to another room (at the cost of moving the problem elsewhere). It's not actually mine so I don't really want to go to the expense of reupholstering it. The chest also isn't mine, but I'll have them both for a few years yet. If I move the chaise I'd probably have to swap it for a deep red rocking chair I have in another room (see pic), which would again influence the colour scheme. The sofa would fit under the window but there's a radiator there so it's not really ideal. I'll look into moving the TV point though as that would allow me to have chaise / rocking chair and sofa on two walls together. I agree that the blinds are an issue so I think I'll try to get either a glass covering instead, or some white blinds. I may even paint the windows white too if I'm brave enough. For the walls, I liked your mock up Carolins and the suggestions to use a light grey. That's what I was already considering. Still can't decide whether to have a dark grey feature wall, but it's tempting. I agree with the accent colour suggestions - I really like pink or yellow with grey. Comments (11)If you're going to go with an all white look I always recommend that clients consider using a 'silk' paint. They really bounce the light around, and don't become dusty and yellow/grey over time as matt emulsions usually do. As a side bonus they are wipeable, so no need to repaint an area if you make some marks - just wipe them away. Very practical. Comments (1)For inspiration: And teal sofa's are great! But I would -personally- not put brown (weathered penny) on the walls. Especially not if it's 'just as dark' as the teal. Pick either a lighter or a darker color. Pale beige/greige, dark moss*. Offwhite would work just fine, as your midcentury vibe will come from your furniture. And orange and apple green should be used for small accents (pillows etc), not on large surfaces. Comments (15)Hello madelainev What a great room ? :) At the moment you have a calming space very colour complimenting each other. It looks like there is a reading area too where the two chairs are behind the large sofa. Are there shelves on that wall ? Looks like it needs zoning and blending in. I would say sometimes it is trial and era and what works for a family. But if you do not like it switch it around. The key question is what do you want this room to do ? A few questions? 1. Could you post another picture of the wall space where you are taking the picture? So that we see more of the space. 2 Do you have kids ? (what sort of age?) 3.Did you shop around for the woodburner ? £15K sounds a lot. It will not dominate unless you want it to be the focal point. 4. A wall cabinet does not need to take over a wall if it blends in, did you investigate this already were there any you liked at all ? It could be just floating shelves. 5. Do you need storage in this room ? 6. Colours, what colours are already in the room and what colours do you like ? Would you min pops of colour... on the wall are some images with a pop of blue possibly aqua ? Some thoughts : 1.You could hang sheer curtains to soften. There are ceiling rods or wires for this. 2. Move the dining table to behind the Large sofa is. So the front is the living TV area. Therefore more natural light when eating. (this assuming there is not a door there.) 3. Place the two winged chairs where the blue footstool is. Or the blue armchair and footstool together. There or on the opposite side. 4. Move the TV so that it is central. On the wall too. That would balance the room more. You could frame it so it looks like a picture. 5. Add more pictures, photo's to the wall. There are some amazing offers at the moment with only postage paid to get photos on canvas or a print in a frame. Add personal items too. grouped together on a shelf or on the TV cabinet. 6. With big windows / doors, utilize the view and natural light. If you get another sofa put it next to the long one facing in to the room by the windows /door. Behind that put your two winged chairs facing out wit ha poof or a coffee table and that could be your "reading" area. 7. Group the plants together nearer the light or at the corner. So that it feels like you are bringing the garden in. Or next to the Sofa. Hang plants from the ceiling or on the wall. 8. A signature light or group of lights over will lift and an interest to the ceiling. And zone off the area. Adding a rug underneath with give do that too. 4 years agoAbsolutely fantastic space - so envious. Instead of curtains - how about something different, as presumably they are needed for privacy. Just a suggestion - which would make the space around much cleaner.

Really glad you liked it! I really enjoyed doing it. Thanks again for posting it and thank you for your comment.
Regarding the fireplace, they give off great light and can create a lovely ambience, so you could use a modern "no heat" electric one that will give you the same effect but without the heat. The great thing about those is that they come in lots of options so I would suggest a narrow one, but of course you could remove the fireplace completely and replace with a narrow cabinet for TV equipment. You could even recess the cabinet with a tinted glass front so that it looks like a fireplace.
With a narrow fireplace or the narrow cabinet, you have the extra space to hang a TV above it.
Regarding shelves I think floating shelves that match the wood of the cabinets either side would look great. I've attached some examples.

4 years agoHaving lived in The Gambia, I agree a fireplace is the last thing that is needed in these hot countries, even just looking at a fire makes one hotter. Replace the fire with the tv - a few examples - although the colours are wrong for you.

4 years agoI understand not wanting a fireplace but I think the reason Arcs design was so successful is that the chimney breast created a vertical pattern that draws your eye up. Even if you don’t have a chimney perhaps you can create some sort of texture or pattern on the wall to replicate the idea.
