Garden mirrors

I am thinking of putting mirrors in the garden but have been advised that we could have a problem with birds flying into them. Has anyone had this problem? Thanking you.

Hi Gillian,

It occasionally happens unfortunately, but very rarely in gardens as the birds will fly higher than the fences and walls of the garden. It will more likely happen in woodland areas with at lot of trees.

Thank you Kate for your quick reply.. I just love your garden design. We have the same size of garden but with a lodge at the bottom where my daughter and family live and they need access through our house. Do you provide design only? If so, what is the cost. Thanking you.

I would buy Acrylic garden mirrors and alternate the length if the wall with trellis and mirrors. Grow something rampant up the trellis and you soon won't have to look at the wall- I would get clematis and jasmine and honeysuckle and passion flower

There are many great ways you can re-design your garden, you just need a bit of inspiration! Without seeing your garden it can be difficult to advise specifically but I normally advise the following as a starting point. Garden Mirrors. Outdoor mirrors are a fantastic way to create more space in your garden, reflect the light and create a new style in your space. Depending on the style of your garden you could try a modern design seen here or a characteristic one seen here Garden screening. You mention your garden is a 'concrete jungle'. One way to add more texture to your garden is to apply a screening along walls and fences to create a completely different atmosphere. This is very simple and easy to do and we have a huge range to inspire you here Vertical planting. If you're short on space vertical planting is an excellent way to make the most of the available space. Plant a tree, or a climber that might also help to disguise a wall. By growing upwards you will also create a richer texture in your garden. Sail Shade. One other super easy way to lift some colour into your garden and protect yourself from the sun is a sail shade. Depending on which colour you choose it can really help to add some character and give a completely different feel to your garden. It sounds like the principals of designing an awkward plot have been established; turn your focus inwards away from the boundaries and hide the shape of the plot where you can with structures, planting and focal points. Given the garden is north facing i agree that any terrace needs to be at the far end of the of garden to maximise on the southerly aspect outside the shadow of the house. If you put screens, hedges in front of it to hide it you will shade out the terrace. A structure in this location such as pergola or gazebo will help hide the boundaries providing you don't position it in line with the boundary. I'm not sure whats beyond your plot but you could remove sections of the hedge to get long views out, they call it a borrowed landscape! I would create a strong geometric or series of strong shapes in the centre that don't relate to the boundaries or garage orientation so as to hide the boundaries. You could create a large sweeping pergola structure in the top NW corner of the garden with generous planting behind to take your eye away from the boundary. Lots of potential though, so have fun!

I did also read about the Window Tax - it make sense to explain why I have so many blocked up windows. I think I do need to put a window back in on the side above the front door or at least give the impression of a window or similar - looks too plain otherwise. I think on balance sticking with just the off-white looks best and most in-keeping. The pic above has the window put back in and it does look much better balanced. Could I maybe put the window in with some obscure glass (or maybe mirrored glass) but have it blocked off on the inside? It would make very useful in-built storage in the bathroom.
