Size of walk in shower advice needed!

Hi all,

We're looking to put a walk in shower in our new bathroom. The existing shower is in an alcove so I intend to leave the plumbing where it is and just extend it. I hope to use an under tile tray and just have one piece of glass at the end- as minimal as possible. The opening in this situation where we would walk in would be 600mm. Please see rough design in picture. My question is, is water going to go everywhere with this deisgn with no door? Do we need an extra bit of glass on the end of the wall to bring down the gap size? The intention is to use this shower head which projects 33cm from the wall and points straight down. Hubby and I are both short so it would have very occasional use by taller people. Hi Sophie,

These are usually around 1m deep, but I personally don't see it as a problem being 800mm. It's also down to your showering habits (slow vs high water stream etc) & whether you're ok to do a bit of clean up after shower - a little squeegee works great on tiles!

You should used a preformed tray under your tiles which has a slope built in towards the drain. This will help the water to flow back towards the drain. Water is always going to splash outside the opening and you can put down a bath mat to step out onto which will catch the excess. Ultimately it depends how much the water annoys you. You could start off without a screen and then add one later if it proves to be a problem.

Oh wow, impressive space you have there! It's huge! And thank you - I love my house too :)) Plus I agree with you on the dining room - only good for dusting :)) Regarding wood vs carpet: we chose Engineered Character Oak in brushed oil - mainly because, having to completely renovate the house, we decided to go for underfloor heating top to bottom; and engineered wood is apparently the best type of wood to use with it. Therefore, carpeting was out for us however, even with central heating, we would've probably gone for wooden flooring and a lush rug. But that is a personal preference; as with the en-suites, I have rather strong opinions against carpet, so I don't think I'm the best person to advise you in this respect. (hmmm, now I'm starting to get what hubby means about me being high maintenance...) Sorry I couldn't help more, I'll try to do better in the future :))

the toilet is on the wall above the bath with the door in the top right corner. We are limited on where we can put the shower due to windows on the wall to the left. Thanks WestWest it is good to here that there is limited splashing with the 30cm folding panel. i thin with adjustment in the main panel the opening into the shower will be 50cm which is tight as you say but is hopefully manageable.

Chris, We have the same shower tray as you (but in the 150cm format) and also exactly the same issue. I think it's a design fault as the tray is too shallow and the ridge round the edge does not contain the water. Our highly untechnical solution has been to buy shower mats which are exactly 80cm wide (from Christy on their website) and then to accept that they will get soaked and to dry them on the heated towel rail. Sorry if this is not the most sophisticated solution but it works for us. Good luck

If a sink can go there, a shower should be able to go there too, no? What reasons did he have? If for built-in handles I understand, but with a regular shower tap+hose, what's not possible? What about adjecent rooms? Any area about 100cm wide x80cm deep you could miss? We've managed to fit a toilet into our bathroom by removing a cupboard in our landing. Besides that, a 83cm door is wide enough (standard size in our whole house). Note: reserve 85cm width for your toilet. A walk in shower needs to be about 120-150cm long, why would you want such a long glass enclosure in a small space like that? That's valuable floorspace you've got to balance out! ;) So this could work, but I think is not a good idea:
