Bedroom downlights question

Hi
I'm trying to layout downlights in our bedroom and struggling. It's just over 4 X 3 metres.

I first layed out the downlights evenly, but it looks silly because some are above the wardrobe. If I move them evenly towards the centre of the room, they're all a bit too close to the middle, and since the bed is the focal point they all look like they're positioned wrong.

So basically...do I arrange the lights around the bed, or symmetrically in the room? The door is at the bottom of the room by the way; the other one shown is a cupboard hiding in an alcove formed by the stairs underneath.

Should I stick to the guidelines about distances from walls, or go for corners?

If you move your furniture any time your lights will all look out. I don't think spotlights ate good for bedrooms. 1 pendant and some lamps is enough, saves the worry about getting it wrong too!

Also, how many were you thinking? Less is more, is that the saying?

was this posted some time ago? or am I confusing it with another post... anyway, whats your definition of teenage like? Because I think that depends on the age of the teen.. to start with, make a huge frame / wall of all rosettes together, hung at same levels and directions. White works with most colours. are you keeping walls white and getting purple furniture and accessories? have you considered staining your wood? rearranging the furniture so that the drawers aren't right next to the cupboard may help. And try clearing off some things from the shelves in the corner (between the desk and bed)

No worries. I think re the wall unfortunately you're are going to have to fill the holes and paint over it or it won't look great. You can always do a feature wall in a stronger shade of whichever colour you use. It doesn't have to be loads darker or anything, just a shade. New desk is great, so you're getting rid of the bookcase? I'd hang a mirror a few inches above the desk when it arrives.If you have a largish mirror you could always drape some kind of fairy lights over it to make it more dressing table? I thought I'd seen another posting that looked as if your bed would go against the wall? If not, try moving the pine chest to the bottom of the bed so you have more space on that wall. I would just try different arrangements though when your new desk arrives as it's difficult to tell from the pics. They do similar animal cushions in Orange and blue but have a look around online. Places like h&m do really cheap cushions or even diy stores.

Gone through my album of our very own decorating therapy journey and found these. I hope you can see the roller black-out in the first photo, it's tucked inside the recess of the window. The Duette is a peachy colour which looks a lot lighter colour in the north-facing sun. The one in the five panel window is the room below, it does not have the roller blind but the curtains are black out. They are not as efficient in blocking out light as the roller in recess though. the curtains are from Hamilton McBride, only reason i got them were because not many wide (350cm) curtains are cheaply available on Amazon... If your room is not too cold, you can also consider wooden venetian, mine is in white colour as you can see from the 'blue room' (it's F&B's new Vardo btw), which is on the ground floor of the north facing side. 247 does oak colour too. Many neighbours asked us where we got those from!! They look great at a good price - those two windows cost me just under a £100 - but they are not the most energy efficient. They are okay blocking out light but if you have it in the south-facing room, it might not be quite enough. Do go to 247blinds and request some free samples, it's worth a try. Hope this helps! ;)

Are you sure you want to go industrial? The room looks like a cute little period bedroom not a converted warehouse (yes, I do know the industrial style is very fashionable at the moment). Personally, I like the idea of having a whole wall of curtains. Alternatively, is there a wallpaper with the same pattern that you could use on the wall? As you seem to like mid-century, vintage pieces too, I think I'd stick to that theme as it's more likely to really complement the room.

Hi,

This is currently the best layout I can come up with, but it looks compared to the bed position!

Closer to the walls is a bit better, but it takes the bottom couple of lights very close to / above the wardrobe. Plus there's some "obstructions" in the roof space there to avoid.

Maybe have a look through John Cullen's lighting tips, I've copied one but there are many. They seem to be the go to expert for all pros in the uk

This image is one of theirs, downlights have been used to light the wardrobes, these might be directional ones given the position and light as I'm not sure they should go too close to the edge as they cause shadows. I think the key though is to have them where they're needed, never in a grid pattern. I'm not that keen on downlights in a bedroom personally but would make sure they're on a dimmer. I would also include reading/table lamps next to the bed, I think (!) they should be at shoulder height when sat up. Hope this helps a little

If you are having a built in wardrobe, you could consider a feature like this - the built-out section at the top accommodates downlights - this solves the problem of them looking too close, as they are clearly an integrated feature, and will also help navigate the objects in the ceiling!
