Broken Kitchen Drawer

Hi guys, my first post so be gentle with me. My kitchen is very very old and tired looking. I am planning to move next year so want to give cupboards a spruce up to make the place a bit more appealing. I have two questions:

1. Is painting/spraying a good option?

2. I have one broken drawer and need to locate a replacement carcass (dimensions 45 x 24.5 x 10) , any suggestions? I have tried the usual places Wicks, B&Q etc. but without any joy.

I have attached a picture of an exact replica of the drawer (please don't laugh)

Hi Warren, firstly you can most definitely paint or spray your kitchen unit fronts. You can do it yourself or get them professionally sprayed. I know some car re-spray depots offer this service. Painting by hand isn’t difficult, just laborious. If you choose to paint them yourself then clean the cupboard front, sand lightly to key the paint, then paint 2 coats of primer and then 2 top coats. Use a small foam roller and a small brush for the fiddly corners. I’ve used eggshell paint on furniture and it gives a lovely finish. Oil based is more hardwearing but very smelly, or you could use water based. Little Greene do a lovely selection of colours.

I had a quick google for drawer carcasses and found lots of online companies sell them so worth a look. Here’s two that looked interesting

I was wondering if I may be so cheeky to ask for a photo to see what it looks like... I have two double wine racks under a breakfast bar and being south facing next to a large sliding, I think the wine will get very warm, so looking for a place for knick knacks. Yeah I read that thread. They were ' do what's right for you' I'm more..do what's right for you and your bank a/c If its worth more equity..you can pull it out and use it to buy another place...cheaper..and have your first rental, you landlord you ! you have this amazing opportunity to not just sort your kitchen out but to sort your flat out so that it will be in the best phase of it's life ever!! if it means spending 3000 pounds more to move the kitchen but it gives you a third bedroom which is then worth 12000 pounds it's kind of a no brainer you don't have to have 3 bedrooms the same size you can have two wonderful large rooms and then a third that can be a study/ baby's room /guest room you could have this wonderful large open plan living area that you use all of plus you have your large bedroom you design it all at once and spend the money all at once to get exactly what will work best for this flat and what will work best for you long term I read on the other thread you want to stay there for a while which is great you just have to make sure you get it right now so that eventually if you want to sell or you want to pull out equity to go travelling or to start a family or to get a bigger car because you're pregnant with triplets you can do that because of your little Cash Cow that you're living in at the moment Www.floorplanner.com is free and it also let's you see 3D Have a play. It shows you the exact size of rooms etc. Has furniture too. Even animals I use that to play ' future beach house ' dreams !! If it was me...I would always try and make my place worth more. If that's two bed, two baths..do that instead ( make kitchen ensuite ) If its 3 beds, 1 bath..do that. If its loft looking ( as in open plan) ld do that. But I like making equity in my home

As he supplied and fitted the kitchen, then he really doesn't have an excuse for not knowing the sizes of the cupboards to which you were referring and wanted replacing. However, if he wasn't sure he should have double checked with you. Plus he should have ensured the drawers he was making up, were the right size before constructing them. Personally, I think it's all down to him.

Do you want a carcase or just a drawer box? If it’s just the drawer box that’s broken you don’t need a carcase too unless that’s faulty.

Drawer boxes are easy to source. You could even ask a chippy to make one up out of white MFC.
