Colour Scheme in a Bright Bedroom

Hey!

So just to explain my situation here - I am a 16 year old in a room with a lot of furniture and colours picked out years ago. I'm planning to slightly redesign my room by replacing some furniture and furnishings, and repainting the walls (this is all with my parent's permission and with the allowance I've saved up).

However, I'm struggling to choose new colours. I will be keeping the current purple carpet, and I have built-in wardrobes and storage that are mint green/ pastel teal. There's also a large wooden trim that has a bit of the mint green colour in it. There a few posters I'd like to keep on the walls, which are predominantly pink and blue. Most of the current furniture/furnishings I've got are hot pink, and the wall is a candyfloss pastel pink. There is also a white desk with pink draws, and my dad thinks it might be possible to repaint the draws to another colour.

So does anyone have any advice when it comes to choosing a colour scheme that can still keep the room bright and cheerful, but leave some space for adding colourful decor? I was thinking more neutral like grey would work for the wall - so I could also make things more mature if my current interest in 'kawaii' (cute) things fades. But hey - I'm far from being someone good with colour theory. If anyone has suggestions, they would be very much appreciated.

Hi! How about painting the whole room including panelling and the wardrobes light grey and a wall beside the bed darker grey to create a focal point. The posters would look better if they were framed.

Thank you for the advice! I'll definitely try framing my posters. The only issue is I'm not allowed to paint the built in furniture or panelling, because it takes up the majority of the room. I can only repaint the walls and the pink desk drawers, so I'm trying to find a colour that could work somewhat with the purple and teal.

I've drawn a layout of my room to show the scale of the storage and wardrobes. I hope it can help!

Yes of course, with us it's actually pretty simple because we sell the bed as a whole, so you have the headboard and base. The base can either be a bedstead (with wooden feet) or a divan base that can come with drawers. Have you had a look at a golden colour for the walls, it works amazing with that muted pink colour... http://www.pippajamesoninteriors.co.uk/2015/trends/dulux-colour-of-the-year-2016-cherished-gold/ Or if you go for a more neutral wall colour brighten the room up with vibrant bed linen, perhaps a pattern or if your more into plain colours then go for a linen that super luxurious, it will instantly make the room look more luxurious.

It sounds to me that the room needs some pattern and the wallpaper idea will sort that. If you are trying to avoid florals there are lots of geometric or retro patterns you could consider. You then likely need an additional accent colour and the earlier comment is right that pink goes very well with navy- but so do most other colours- in my opinion the navy is such a strong choice the accent should perhaps be a softer pastel colour but teal, white, coral, and brassy golds also contrast.

I guess it depends how you want your room to feel but if you want an ice cream sundae vibe you could pair it with baby pink. For a vibrant contrast you could add coral and oranges. Or for a more relaxing contrast beige and creams. I hope this helps and if you are still not sure it might be worth looking for online inspiration. Good luck!

in that case, i'd go light on the walls and probably try to match the upper wall with the wardrobe and trim mint green / light turquoise ( http://inspiration.farrow-ball.com/itemdetails.aspx?id=26849) paint the desk light grey ( https://www.farrow-ball.com/paint-colours/dimpse) and add cute pulls

i'd also hang a shelf above the bed and style it with amthyst rock, plants, small mirror, framed art.

and i's also add astring of fairy lights above the desk or the bed.

so the whole scheme would be: pale mint green / aqua / turquiose on the walls and curtains (or just a roman blind), green/grey desk and purple / amethyst / pink / gold accents in the accessories.

with white and gold accents

My niece is the same age as you and wanted a more “grown up” room so she has chosen pale grey walls, blush pink and rose gold accessories. I don’t have a photo, but it’s something like this. Quite understated, but I must say I love Marina‘s suggestions! A great place for cheap as chips frames is The Range if you want to frame your posters - I think they deliver on their online shop.
