Bedroom colour scheme dilemma!

I want to do a complete bedroom makeover- in my head I know what kind of colours I want to go for (browns, beige and light gold). Usually I go for very bright colours and this time I would like to try something different, a little softer and relaxing. I want the overall look to be comfortable, yet modern (so yes there will be some fur- but I don't want to end up with a log cabin style room!).

The issue I'm having with this colour scheme is what base colour to go for (e.g. bed frame, wardrobes, draws e.t.c). My boyfriend is against having a white bed frame, but I'm concerned black will be too heavy.

I am not opposed to wooden bed frames (providing it's not pine!) but dislike wooden draws and wardrobes- I much prefer high gloss, sleeker finishes.

Any suggestions would be highly appreciated!

Hi Elodie, it sounds like you've got an exciting project on your hands! Have you ever considered an upholstered bed? You would have so much choice colour wise... we can upholster our beds in any fabric you like and have lots of headboard designs to choose from. This way it may be easier to find something that both you and your boyfriend can agree on! The rest of the furniture could still be in the sleeker, high gloss finish that you prefer.

I must admit, I've seen a few upholstered head boards and did think they looked like a good solution, but haven't looked into it properly because it seemed more complex than buying an entire bed frame (probably just my naivety though). I know it's a bit like asking 'how long is a piece of string', but would you be able to give a very rough estimate on the cost of a kingsize upholstered headboard?

I love some lusciousness in my bedroom ... reds. pinks and oranges! (yes I also have lighter softer colours but like some fun thrown it too otherwise feels so boring). Am surprised that pink wasn't one of the choices! People talk a lot about serenity and seem to forget about other types of energy in the bedroom. It is said that the bedroom is mainly for 2 things both beginning with "S" and yet most people seem to only focus on the sleep bit.

As the duvets are so colourful, perhaps choose a pale grey similar to the one in the colourful duvet, maybe Dulux Goose Down, and a Roman blind in a plain fabric a few shades darker. Although I do rather like colourful blinds so a shade within the duvet covers would look great.

I love dark muted colours, so if it was my room I’d be painting it that beautiful dark green. I’d also be painting the whole room as I don’t get using paint to create afeature wall. Floor length curtains in blush/dusky pink. Velvet if you can. I’d then accessorise with the pink and lighter green. Love all those colours. We’re in the process of painting our lounge a dark green (F&B duck green) and it already looks cosy and luxurious

The room is all mismatched, style wise, as you've noted! If you're planning to rent it, & be gone for a long period, do you really need to change the bed? If you are set on the industrial look, that type of bed works actually. So, maybe if it has to be bigger, just get the same style. The floor works, the wardrobe works, & the chosen lockers would too. The chandelier doesn't, so swap it for a cheap alternative. And some bedside lamps. If the bed is bigger, you'll need bigger bedlinen too, but if you're renting, they'll have their own. So, you only need a cover for staging the room for renters. Just buy a suitable duvet cover - the pretty floral doesn't work for industrial. Try something with mustard / yellow to add life to the grey. A throw & a couple of cushions, along with the bedside lamps, will help it to look more cosy. A long horizontal piece of art over the bed would make that wall less grim too. Or, you could try putting wallpaper behind & / or beside the bed - there are loads of types. Pick a stick on one that you can remove later. A white brick wall type of paper would work for industrial look, but be a lighter colour. Look at Wallpaper Direct for ideas. If no walls being touched, I know you've not much time, but could you even paint the ceiling white over the dressing table area? The room will look bigger and brighter. Right now, it seems to shrink to the size of the white ceiling area. However, the industrial loft look isn't universally appealing...! I agree that a renter might prefer a lighter, airier, relaxing fresh space. Try a linen type of headboard, not velvet. Velvet means plush etc, & your grey floorboards don't really complement that look. Linen can be crisp & clean & smart. If you're not moving from grey, pick a complementary colour - light grey, or a green - that you can match lighter bedlinen to. Or, again, a lovely wallpaper to tie in your grey banisters with new headboard colour. And paint the wardrobes to blend with the walls so they disappear. Pick lighter coloured lockers - a white table with drawer maybe. Or a floating shelf with drawer.

Yes of course, with us it's actually pretty simple because we sell the bed as a whole, so you have the headboard and base. The base can either be a bedstead (with wooden feet) or a divan base that can come with drawers. A Kingsize upholstered bedstead costs around £600 but the price will depend a little on what bed design you go for. Love those headboards. I think a rich fabric would add texture too.
