Has anyone removed an acrylic splash back Or painted one please?

We have inherited a bright yellow splashback. Think it’s going to be very difficult to remove. Any ideas please? If we can’t remove it we will have to paint it. Again any ideas how to do it?

Can you not lever it off using a chisel at each end? How long is it ?

Thanks but no, not without taking all the kitchen cupboards off. It’s so strong think it would take all the plasterboard too

Hi Tani, you have two options here - do it yourself or hire someone. You said you have a power washer (Karcher). Try it first. Brick cleaners and wire brushes will just do your heading. Power washer should do the trick nicely. Just be careful around the very edge, as it can chip if the brick is weak (H&S goes without saying here). If it doesn't work at first, you can try bubble gum remover. It makes the otherwise elastic material very brittle, like freezing and should come off easily, but will still leave a residue mark, which you should then be able to remove with your Karcher. If you don't want to go through the hustle or if all above fails to deliver, I would recommend a power steam cleaner. People who offer such service are graffiti removers (your local council should be able to facilitate if no private contractors in the area). Just bear in mind that the portion of brick you will clean this way will be 'renewed' and might look different to the rest of the wall forcing you to do the whole surface. If it's really persistent and everything else fails, your last resort would be sand blasting. This will restore the brick to it's very best, but as above, you will need to do the whole wall, so it doesn't look funny.

Colourhappy sinking the fridge in the wall is my plan, just not right away. I don't even have to steal space, it'll fit into the 'triangle' but I would need to take the kitchen door away and move the utility door. I'll make do by adding an end panel to the right of it to blend it away when seen from in the dining room. Right now it has to stay where it is. As for tiles, I'm somewhat stuck because the worktop has a marbled vein though it. It's white but not brilliant white and next to white wall tiles, it'll look vanilla. The veining through it is grey with a tiny touch of copper/burnt orange through it. Hence why it's called Calacatta gold. I live metro tiles but it's to right here. There is herringbone on the floor so though I do live patterned tiles, again it needs to be simple. Right now I'm considering a glass slab. Any thoughts on that?

My kitchen was slightly larger but needed the light units. We went with a white gloss, a wood effect dark grey laminate worktop and teamed it with walnut effect laminate flooring. The flooring really warmed the look up In my experience ... I wish I'd have had full glass splashbacks as the amount of sauce that gets splattered on the painted wall would have been easier to wipe off glass! Worth the money in my opinion. I went for white/clear as didn't want to commit to a strong colour. If we had stayed (not sold it) I would have painted around the units a colour which could have easily been changed. You could also consider a clear glass splash back (above the oven) that can be screwed on. That way you can paint or paper behind it and change it when you fancy. Usually they glue them on so you are stuck with it (no pun intended) Definitely look around for a better quality gloss unit as they can chip (sister has high street ones and they always chip!)

I can imagine you must be demoralised because you can’t afford what you were dreaming of but I have got to say I get excited about this kind of house, it’s amazing high ceilings and finding one at an end so the garden is not shaded is brilliant. I think you could have a beautiful space if you put bifold doors between the kitchen and the lean to, raise the floor in the lean to so it’s the same height as the kitchen and have the same flooring for a feeling of continuity. The bifolds satisfy building regs as you don’t need to rebuild the lean to, you have a dining space for all but the coldest days and when it is cold you just close the bifold doors.

I would imagine that is well and truly stuck on with something like silicon, gripfill, sticks like sh** etc, you say you have plasterboard, if its a modern house then its either dob and dab or studwork you might have to take the wall units down and cut the plasterboard away as well and then renew the platerboard and reskim. We sometimes had to do that even when removing wall tiles. Quicker and easier in the long run.

You could possibly cover it? Do you have a picture? If it’s that sturdy, maybe you could tile over it, or put up some tongue and groove over it, depending on the style of your kitchen. There are paints for lots of different surfaces so painting could be an option too.

You could always try a vinyl covering..... have a look at https://www.vinylwarehouse.co.uk for ideas.
