Decorating a new home with wood flooring!

Please please please help me in figuring out how to decorate our new home! We’re hopefully moving in in the next month or so.

The aesthetic in our current home is a lot of grey, white, and pale blue. However, our new home has wooden floors and (a different shade to the floor🙄) wood-style PVC window frames.

We like quite clean, crisp, simple designs with maybe a little pop of colour but the floor is really throwing me off. I feel like its quite yellow/orange and I just don’t know what goes with that (in terms of bad frame, curtains, rugs etc).

We can’t really afford to redo the flooring, plus with a baby and dog it will be easier to clean.

What would you do? Any suggestions welcome and greatly appreciated!

I’d love to help.
This home is full of natural light which is great!

Once you start getting your furniture in and adding rugs you will find the flooring will soften and not be the focus anymore.
Don’t let the floor steer you, keep to the colours you love and you’ll soon forget about the floor and be able to focus on the other areas of the home.

Hi, I don't know if you know that upvc can be painted, so that might be an idea for the future.

I would definitely paint the skirting boards and door frames. That will make a big difference. Think the floor will look much better if it's not fighting with the colour of those.

Minnie is absolutely right about the wallpaper - whether there is a physical demarkation or not, you will still be creating a false line for the eye that's hardly going to be restful in your living room, and will just look odd. My advice would be to dump the idea of a feature wall and put your desire for a floral pattern into a lovely rug. I assume you are keeping the carpet? It looks light beige in the photos and you need to keep this colour in mind, as well as the black of the sofas, when choosing the rest of the scheme. Maybe have a look at rugs with big, swirly floral patterns in browns and coppers or golds as well as beige and black, then pick colours from that (copper or gold would be lovely) for your cushions and curtains. The walls (and up the staircase wall) I would paint in a very, very light shade of whatever beige or taupe dominates in the carpet (impossible to tell from a photograph so grab some paint charts). Hi - bigger screen today ! Looks a great party house ! Might be slightly less expense to put kitchen at front of ground floor and have wood burner and relaxed seating at the rear in the sunshine ? Purely as the pipes and electrics can drop down from above easier into the kitchen at that end from current position - and flue can go through existing chimney rather than putting a new chimney in all the way up the house ( mega bucks!) Were you considering opening French doors onto a small raised deck from ground floor as a more direct access to garden ? As long as you can still egress from basement (especially if it will become a sleep zone ) Might make life easier to add some more bathrooms - at least one on each floor would make life easier especially when you have a house full of guests ! I think you will have a great journey turning this home into one that echoes your sense of fun and style ! Enjoy the process !!!

Hello Trisha, If it's a new built house maybe you would want to go for contemporary style interior. I would suggest you to make a moodboard where you put down all your ideas, favourite colours and texture, furniture pieces you like, accessories and decoration. This way you will save money by avoiding spending money on unnecessary things. You will be able to develop your idea and come up with a great concept. Let your home reflect your personal taste and style. I love how you've kept the character alive in a tasteful eclectic mix. I think you may like a splash of colour in the bathroom by adding a canvas roman blind in a bold teal with a coordinating runner rug and some luxurious towels. A wall mounted rack for folded towels above the loo, will interrupt the monotone of the wall as may a plant or some. Also some woven floor baskets or quirky toiletpaper or magazine container to add interest.

Is the floor Oak colour? Difficult to see from the image. If so green tones compliment Oak. Look at Cromarty and Mizzle F&B colours. Johnstone’s do an excellent colour match in paint.

Painting the frames and skirting IMO makes more maintenance so I would not change them.

Congratulations on the new home, how exciting.

PVC windows can be painted, there are services available that specialise in this.

With regards to the floor, if you would like to add more timber furniture for example, I advise rather than trying to match all timbers, always choose a different timber which ties in tonally with the fixed flooring which you intend to keep. This adds depth and also timber can fade and if they do not match this is not noticeable.

I agree that skirting and architrave will benefit from paint that ties in with the walls as this creates the more clean crisp look. Also timber finishes can help you create that clean crisp look if cool colours such as white are juxtaposed against the timber.

This can be tricky to envisage, especially when you're current colour scheme of your home is so different! I have completed many projects which required me to work around the current flooring etc, and also existing furniture! What a stunning house. The floors are lovely and add warmth, breaking them up with rugs will make a big difference. I would definitely paint over the door frames and skirting boards but I think the windows work. They are not a dark mahogany colour, but much nicer colour that make work with your things, I would hold back on that for now. This book by Emily Henderson may be worth getting as it contains lots of images that seem to fit with the description of your preferred look.

Love the floor! I agree paint the skirting and architrave white or the same colour as the walls will tone down the contrast. I assume the furniture is the previous owners? Decor wise it depends what furniture you already have, but I think a slightly Scandi/boho style would really suit the house and that lovely floor. I really like the windows too.
