Kitchen/diner/dayroom layout help?

We are almost ready to start our extension however I am really struggling to figure a layout for the kitchen/diner. I would like a kitchen/diner with a comfortable area for us to spend time as a family during the day or when socialising, and ideally make the most of the extra daylight/garden view from the bifolds and roof lantern. I cannot seem to achieve a layout that makes this work. Any ideas greatly appreciated.

I think an island based kitchen would look brilliant in this space and create that social feel that you are looking for. By having most tasks accessible whilst facing into the room, you can talk to others and engage with your garden views. Depending on the feel you are looking for, you could look at some REALLY modern looking dining table solutions that integrate into the island or this also works with a more traditional layout too.

plenty of room i'd say! i'd stick it in the bottom end behind a wall of tall units for the kitchen (fridge, freezer, oven tower, pantry) and then have base units only along the wall facing bay window (to keep it bright and airy and maximise the width of the room as much as possible). then the bay window could be a lovely built-in seated area for table, or there's space for an island and then the bay window becomes circulation space. the top end looks like glass all the way round? so assuming dining table would go there - but if you did the window seat and table then that could be seating area instead.

I prefer the island option. im not sure what you want/need to include but it appears (by eye) to give the greatest amount of space. I’d reduce the island to 900mm and give the extra space between the units. You could have the plumbed appliances on the island and seating like this with a 300mm overhang for the stools. This kitchen is longer than yours but i think a tad wider assuming the tiles are 600. The island could be a lighter colour than the other units making it feel a but wider

I’m not 100% sure I have the dimensions or orientation correct - hopefully I have. I definitely agree with taking out the stud wall between the kitchen & hall. I presume you will replace it but further away from the back wall of the house which will lengthen your kitchen. If you keep your kitchen in its current room I think you could have your run of tall cupboards as proposed in the new kitchen plan but switch the orientation of the island to run in parallel to that wall. Put the hob on the island and you will look towards the dining area as you are cooking. Having the island parallel to the tall cupboards is also a more modern look. If you take out the wall between the kitchen & current dining area too you would have the scope to make that run of cupboards a bit longer too by taking them over to your double-doors. I think you need to make that whole space at the back of the house feel like one large room (kitchen diner) - which could be achieved by including some of the same kitchen units in the dining side. Are you keeping the fireplace if you keep the kitchen in its current space?

Thank you for your thoughts. I agree an island would work well and love the idea of integrating a dining table into the island. Is this somethjng you have done or have examples of? I guess essentially I'm looking for floor plan layout ideas that involve the kitchen, where to put a dining table and could also fit in a comfortable sofa area.

I'd have L shaped kitchen, island at start of room and dining table by doors with couple armchairs

This looks to be the solution we need. As it would then free up the end of the room for a sofa etc. Many many thanks!

How many of you in the home? Is this a bungalow? Is there a reason why you’re not extending out the full width of the kitchen?

Thanks for replying. I am only looking for layout ideask am not changing build plans. The above post seems to be a excellent idea, if you also have an idea on how to achieve what I'd like that would be great.

I don't think you have space for the island/integrated table as above.

How many at dining table do you need to seat?
How many on soft seating eg is it just couple armchairs or are you hoping to have a sofa?
Do you plan a TV?
Do you want dining table by your doors to garden?

You need to have your priorities so we can advise you.

Hi Steph, ideally your layout and 'priorities' should inform your build plans. I mentioned the extension width as currently you have roughly 5m2 of unusable space near the entrance of the kitchen and lounge doors. Extending outwards could potentially afford you room for a sofa or valuable space to pull out chairs around a table or incorporate a slim kitchen island/breakfast bar.

The number of people in the home and the different items you want in the room (TV, sofa vs armchairs, etc) will help determine the type of layout advice people will be able to offer you as Ellie suggested above. The more detailed you can be about the specifics of your priorities the better. :)

Worth consulting a specialist who can talk you through your requirements and provide you with a layout that works with your lifestyle before starting the build.

I disagree. My plans have been designed with various factors in mind. None of which I'm here to discuss. So, my post was about suggestions for a layout In which I detailed my requirements clearly. I very promptly received a suggestion from a professional who was able to read and understand my query and give an excellent solution that will work very well. Problem solved.... If you are not able or willing to work with the information given then scroll on.... No need to pursue... You don't need to have input... I have a solution... Have a great life and move forward.

There is really no need for the last paragraph of your post. We're all on here to help and seek help and it's a relatively friendly community (at least from my experience). Often times you will receive advice/suggestions you don't want to hear or that you hadn't factored into your plans, or hadn't thought about. It's all par for the course.

I wish you luck with project and hope all goes well with the professional you have enlisted.
