Flooring Direction for open plan concept

Hi. I've had a extension done and essentially made the whole of downstairs open plan apart from the living room. We want to lay wood effect tile planks but wonder what the best direction would be? The open plan area is an upside down U shape. Do we go all in one direction, or do we break it up? Initial idea was to do vertical flooring in the entrance hallway to the kitchen doors, then the kitchen > dining zone > family room would be horizontal. What do you think?

Hi, I would lay everything in the same direction and would go 'vertically' from front of the house to the back. Think it's more of a personal preference, so that just seems right to me.

Hi Nach,

If you are using all the same type of flooring, do not break up the direction. Lay everything in the same direction throughout or it will look wrong.

As far as the direction to lay the tile - here is how to figure that out. Lay your tile or flooring's length in whichever direction you want the room to look bigger. So if you want a room to look longer, you lay the flooring length in that direction and if you want the room to look wider, you lay the flooring length across the room.

As you are doing multiple rooms, go to each room and figure out if the room will look better if it appears longer or wider than it is now. You may get a different direction for each area. But because you want to lay all the same flooring in the same direction (really a must), you choose the best direction for the primary area(s) of your home and do the rest of the areas in that same direction.

I would say first and foremost that as this is a large project, you can't do without a concept planner or someone that can draw up your plans in 3D so that you can 'vitually' walk around what you have in mind. You need to pay attention to your access doorways, they aren't marked on either plan. You will need to have the kitchen on the left and access both the pantry and utility from there. Therefore you will negate the whole of that wall for access to those two rooms. Placement of furniture that you would like / need has to be thought about along with the build. It's just as important. The 1st floor doesn't seem to work as there is no access to the Family Bathroom on the plan. Obviously you know the actual shape of the stairs and there are no dimensions which makes it difficult. However, you may need to create a landing and thus you would, if you use the layout given have to sacrifice one of the bedrooms or change the plan. A planner is essential, one that can give you the rooms sizes that you want and utilise the space available.

Hi Gabby - yes I noticed that as well re the notifications!! Ridiculous! Maybe there is something in settings that stops that otherwise I will just have to unfollow everyone, urgh. Whats the name of the one you liked from the samples? There was some nice Karndean BUT they were well out of our price range so it always depends on your budget of course. We wanted a warm but neutral floor and this one looks both warm and cool sometimes. Originally I wanted a rich warm floor to balance out the grey but the orange tones clashed with the units and made them look too blue/retro so we decided to go with this one instead.

When it comes to the forgiveness of an engineered flooring we would highly recommend going for a brushed and lacquered finish. The brushed texture will help if any scratches occur, however we would still recommend putting a good mat at the front door and back door. This is not just for engineered floors this would be recommended for all floors. When it comes to the lacquer this will help protect the floor from spillages and stop the spill from seeping into the wood. You need to consider lots of things when designing overall floor layouts - walkway space, where the sun comes in from, how many inhabitants live here and how many likely guests etc - your kitchen dining for example doesn’t look to have enough walkway space around it and looks too small for six as you’d be overlapping plate space etc etc For projects like this, if you plan to live here some time, it’s worth booking a pro ( like a concept planner ) to either check things through with you, ie working with you to get things right - taking on board all of the info available and coming up with a viable safe design. If this is just a house flip then what ever you do will probably be redone by new owners anyway, so not so important !

I opted to use a herringbone pattern. Which helps if your stuck on which direction to lay flooring. Also look up diagonal patterns too.
