Design Dilemma Gardens

Is a 3m x 3.6 m deck too small for a table and chairs 4-6 people?

Hi, the builder is saying that 3x3.6m deck size is plenty room for a table for 4-6 people, but we are not sure. Any advice before we go ahead?

My deck is 4.1 x 2.5m and I found it was too narrow for a table and chairs so we placed them on paving further up the garden. It’s fine if not in use. I know yours will be a little bit bigger, but I found that when people were seated no one could leave the table without climbing over another person, if you get what I mean! Go with your instinct and go larger 😊
This is where the table ended up.

Thanks Sonia, that advice is golden, we don't want to go ahead and then not to be able to use it for much

You may want to reconsider keeping curtains as well as the shutters, as they don't keep out all the light, particularly as you said the room is bright & south facing. Especially in the summertime when it gets lighter so much earlier. From someone who's been awake since 5am because of this problem! Note to self: must get round to choosing curtains! Also, F&B cornforth white is very pale. We've used it on the interior of our windows, but I think it would be a little boring if we used it on the walls, too close to white, especially in a room as bright as yours. A friend with very good taste recommended Little Greene's French Greys. It's a lovely warm grey & there are several different tones. Don't be scared of even the darkest one as even that isn't too strong on the walls! Our master bedroom used to be at the south facing front of a 30's house too, but after rebuilding we're now at the back of the house. Although I love looking out over the garden, I do miss that glorious sunshine you get! (Although not at 5 in the morning!). Have fun deciding, and remember you can always repaint if you really hate anything!

Hi I know not many have fake grass but it's becoming a really good option. Aesthetically it looks like grass but you don't have to worry about muddy patches, shady areas or cutting it. It does of course require some maintenance and needs to be laid on a good base. I actually wouldn't be so quick to level the garden out, having a step up makes the eye go upwards towards the sky. The area in front of the windows could be paved, gravelled or lay decking squares across it. The boundary walls are lovely and could easily have some climbers on them, using tensioned wires, helping to highlight this feature yet provide more green without making deep planting beds. The tree at the back is possibly a bay tree and might be worth keeping as it gives something of height and structure as long as it's in good condition. Mature trees can be costly so worth keeping it possible. Hope that helps!

There have been dilemmas on here where people have been adamant that their space has to include an American style fridge, island, wine fridge, breakfast bar, homework area for the kids, dining for 6, an L-shaped sofa and a TV that is large enough to be seen from orbit and bifold doors. In my opinion you loose the wow by trying to get the room to do too much. My advice is prioritise what you want and be critical about what suits the room too

Start with your budget, what is it? Make a plan, gardening is not an overnight transformation, it takes time but that for many of us is the sheer joy of it. A year of all around plant interest is possible in time. I would spend my budget on getting the basics in place, so decide what you want e.g. do you want a patio and large beds and no grass, or some grass? If your local college has an agricultural course running they might be willing to help you as the students would learn a lot here, maybe ask? What is your soil type e.g. is it heavy clay or sandy? Is it acidic, alkaline or neutral, these facts are deciding factors on whether or not plants will thrive. Look at what plants are thriving in your local area that is a good guide to your soil, e.g. if there are lots of rhododendrons thriving near by then the soil will be acidic. If it were me, I would get it all dug up, lay a patio, add large beds (put in lots of fine bark compost), and no grass, just gravel. Work with your site, right plant right place is a mantra for a very good reason (!), there is no point planting sun loving plants if you get little sun so do your research on plants that thrive in shade, one good website is Plantsforshade. I would add lots of trellis to grow climbers as they will give you height and trick the eye into making your garden appear bigger, climbing hydrangeas, star jasmine ( for scent) some roses but choose carefully. Now draw up a year's plan so you can start planting for all year round colour, take your time and it's not daunting. Add attractive tubs (often on sale on our local Facebook!) and and plant appropriate annuals, there is loads of advice on line. Best of luck.

I think you'd need 3.5 x 3.5m as a minimum. my deck is 3.5 x 5m - so the size of a good-sized dining room and that works brilliantly - which is just as well because i put in a canal-type pond along one 5m side last year and no-one's backed their chair off into it...yet ;o)

Now that does paint a funny image - can just imagine a party and people taking a dip for fun! Thanks so much for the info, and that it's an adequate size
