Creating Hidden Office Space in Living Room

Hi,

Like so many of us, I am now working from home. I have been looking at modular furniture ideas to install along a wall of in my living room of approx 4 meters. I want to keep a living room feel in the evenings but need an office space in the day. Essentially I need a desk with space for a laptop, monitor, keyboard and mouse. I would like to be able to fold up the desk area to hide the monitor within the modular storage at the end of my working day. I need a solution which does not require the monitor to be unplugged and moved. The rest of the storage will be shelves and space for the TV in the style of a media unit.

Whilst I can find modular media and shelving systems for a media unit, none of them incorporate a desk.

I need to be able to do this on a budget but will pay more to gain quality.

Any clever ideas please?

probably you need something like this. you can fold up the desk and hide the monitor

Thank you. I have seen this but think it was a bespoke build? Am looking for a more off the shelf solution, employing basic DIY skills. I can build a flat pack or drill into a wall!

The fireplace is looking great. It looks like a fun project. I work from home too and it can be sometimes a bit much, not being able to break away from the work. I like surrounding myself with things that inspire my work rather than the work itself. Although, that niche you've got is screaming for a built-in bookshelf. But instead of using it as storage for workstuff, you could fill it with things you love instead. It would add texture and colour to the space. You could also consider having it in wood, to bring in the wood texture your wanted on the floor. I really like the colour palette you've chosen. I have a grey carpet myself. It would be easy to add a pop of blue on your chairs. If you are worried about the desk chair, there are products with castors for carpets. Another thought, is perhaps the desk can be pulled away from the wall, so it fills the room. It can act as your desk, as well as a meeting space or a family space in the evening. It also won't feel like you are facing a wall all day long.

I would extend the worktop from the sink area to create a U shape with maybe a 'lollipop' end for seating. You may need to move the sink over to the left a little to make enough space and this will also give you a good deal of worktop prep area. Hi Dave, If you can have it made, then it's very easy to incorporate what you want. Two desks or one longer to accommodate two - doors to cover the desk area to hide permanent office equipment or not ... etc etc etc. It will need to be very personal to you and how you like to set up a desk area. You can then work around the other details to make it work within you living room. Buying pre-made furniture for this might be quite difficult, though to incorporate it into your living space, fit nicely, look good and to use practically might be more tricky.

Consider an electric fire and fireplace as an alternative to bio-ethanol. My daughter has a bio-ethanol fire in her rented flat. The fuel isn't cheap to buy and you have to order it and store it. It does give off sufficient heat. However, I have chosen electric. You can have the flame effect on with or without heat. You can put it against any wall and take it with you when you leave. Your music and books in the alcove with a nice contrasting comfy chair too.

A picture of the space where this office/media unit will be situated would be useful. However the picture Elena has supplied that you like could be achieved with IKEA units (Besta units, Billy bookcases, floating lack shelves etc) If you Google IKEA hacks you'll find loads of examples of where people have done this and then added wood trim to give the effect of a bespoke built in. Depending on your skills and budget you could do all the flat pack assembly and then pay a joiner for the wall hanging and finishing touches.
