Mock Tudor facade improvements - help!

Help! We have recently bought a 10 year-old mock Tudor house which we would like to make look less Tudor! We are changing the glazing in the windows to plain glass (wooden double glazing) and have thought about painting the beams a pale beige/grey (similar to the mortar colour). My questions are:

- would this go with the Cotswold stone detailing?

- would it look best if the windows were painted the same colour? And the front door? (windows are wooden double glazing, and we're going to replace the front door).

- we can't afford to change the soffits and guttering so need to think what colour to paint the soffits if we're changing the beam colour but need to keep the black guttering.

- what style of front door do you think would look best?

I can't find a picture now, but I've seen a picture of a house with white beams and a grey/beige render, and I've also wondered about this. I wondered if this would help solve the problem of the soffits as they could then be white which I think would look ok with the black guttering.

I've signed upto Photobox to try to mock up the options above but am struggling to do this so far so sorry I can only give you a photo of the house as it is now.

Many thanks for any advice/thoughts/experience? They'll be much appreciated.

Hi, there was a similar query on here previously. I can’t seem to post the link but if you search on Houzz for ‘mock Tudor external’, you should find it. There are some nice examples of beams painted in soft greys / neutrals.

I think your house will be greatly improved by painting the beams pale taupe or pale grey. Here’s some examples, the first being a local pub that went from black and white to soft grey.

The mock Tudor look is only applied to the front. Leaded dg units are only on this face too. Would it work if we just rendered the first floor and gable and leave the ground floor and other elevations as brick? Are we saddling ourselves with endless repaints on the render? I'm also wondering if the present fashion for render will go the way of the fake stone that appeared in the 80s or 90s when people discover the cost of upkeep? But perhaps that's another thread!

Hi Ryan Absolutely love the exterior of your house, i've done a design i hope you like it. I have gone with a touch of modern but also in keeping with the original features and style and history of the house. I've gone for a more Georgian/Tudor door for you in black which i think accentuates the black tiling. You could just paint the door you have and add some DIY stained glass for the pannelling. Adding some lantern wall lights are a great idea to illuminate your entrance space in a safe and also decorative way. Think about adding Drive over lighting around your graveled area to help with parking. I think you should keep the white and exposed brick, maybe just a clean up with a power jet and then a paint should do the trick. I really think you should keep the black features, it adds contrast, so I've kept this in and chosen black outdoor lighting to compliment this. For the garden area I've chosen an alpine and topiary style, alpine succulents and cacti are really in at the moment so if you're wanting a more modern front then definitely go with alpine. Plus you can find some alpine succulents that have a hint of red in them which will compliment the red brick. You could also get some spike lights too, stick them amongst the plants to create a feature. Hi interiorqueen and congrats on your new purchase and mortgage-free status wooppee!! I agree with other comments about preserving the shared appearance with the joined on neighbour and focusing on the garden. I don't find your house unattractive and in fact I really like the tiles! I think removing the sliding door and improving the entrance will make a big difference. I really like the mock-up with the trees. I think having a couple of smallish trees in the front along the drive (make sure they're not going to grow into whoppers!) would add interest at ground floor level and give the eye something else to focus on rather than the current rather stark facade. With some lovely planting I think the house will look great.

As to the front door, I like the way some have a natural wood door for a bit of contrast. 😊
