Having lived in this 1930s bungalow for several years, we have finally got round to updating the exterior. Probably should have been one of the first things we did rather than the last!

We need to have the old render removed and replaced with new smooth render and we were thinking about having cladding instead of render on a couple of the back walls.

The windows are all white upvc and we were thinking of replacing the 2 big bay windows on the front with something a bit more modern. Fascias, soffits and drainpipes could also be changed. The front door, which is on the right hand side of the bungalow is wood and could be repainted. We are also looking at getting a new roof on the garage as it is a bit of an eyesore!

We are really struggling to decide what colour to use. We were thinking pale cream, white or very pale grey. We don't want something that would date or is too dark, and would also like to add a bit of character and 'pretty it up'.

Please see photos below, any thoughts, ideas or examples of colour schemes would be really gratefully received.

You know what, I don't think you need to make too many drastic changes, update render for an off white, clean your roof tiles. Add some plants - I. E troughs of flowers under the bay windows. if your gutters and down pipes are ok they will look fine as they are....but it's neat and well kept. Also, keep your windows white - I think grey or black will look out of keeping with the house style.

I think it’s a very smart house. You may find just painting the render will smarten it up, but of course if you want to make it smoother then by all means do so. I think painting the garage and front door in a matching shade, even though they cannot be seen at the same time, would also be good. Colours such as sage green always look lovely, but there are so many colours that will pep it up. I would leave the guttering, soffits etc unless they are in a poor state. The windows seem to suit the property, but if you want to go more modern, then I think you need to do it all, that is windows, front door, garage door. I visited someone recently (collecting a Gumtree purchase!) and they had dark grey windows with a very pale grey on the rendered walls on their bungalow and it did look lovely. Similar to the fourth picture below.

Lastly, some greenery would help too, whether in pots, troughs or lift some of the block paving and plant in pockets.

Here’s some ideas, some keeping it traditional and some more modern.

Hello joolstc, I like the tiles! I think they just need a bit of attention perhaps they could be replaced or painted something like brick and tile paint and the colour they should be rather than anything else here. I definitely feel these have an impact on the style and I would not remove them unless you were to replace them as they are. They add texture to the house and are actually rather interesting with the cladding... What is not so attractive is the upvc. If you can't replace this aspect you can paint it! There are companies that supply a range of colours and you can breathe new life into this facade with a darker colour for example.. Add some plants and architectural foliage.. I can see a monkey puzzle or something equally interesting on that piece of grass... Some large pots either side of the front door and possibly something green in the windows either side of the two large opening windows.. Fiddle leaf figs would look wonderful... Consider something quite large for a room setting... Large vertical blinds would be great for the whole house and I'd definitely keep these.. Now I'm moving on to the idea of what's inside the house! : ))

If you're trying to achieve an ultra contemporary look, when dealing with dated exteriors people usually opt for: wooden cladding, rendering the whole house and painting it white, new windows with grey frames, a contemporary door with sandblast sidelights and a toplight, replacing old roof tiles with flat interlocking clay tiles and bifolding or sliding patio doors on the exterior of the house. Any combination of the above would give it a modern feel, but if you had to choose one single thing new windows would go a long way. Would love to see a photograph to be able to give more specific recommendations!

There are lots to consider here - if this was one of our clients I would be asking the following questions.. - What is your style do you want a modern-looking front? something country? - What do the neighbours look like? are they all the same? - What's the budget like? - and how many cars do you need to fit on the front there? Personally, if modern looking, I would change the colour of the wood cladding (probably to grey). I would change and update the front door to a more modern look with a large side panel of glass to add light into the porch area. And lastly, I would go down to two spaces for parking and add some minimal maintenance planting on the left-hand side (adding white and greens all year round) which goes around and just under the large windows (this will add interest and depth when sitting inside and warm the front making it feel more homely). A small fence along the front will also zone the garden/house and give you some privacy/security if needed. It's a lovely, exciting project so we wish you the best of luck - do keep in touch :)

Hi, coincidentally I picked the same example photo as Sonia did, but from a different angle. Agree with previous comments. And yes, adding plants will soften the whole look of your home.

Thank you all for your thoughts, ideas and pictures, it's really great to get other people's perspective on this. Definitely if you go for modern, I think you have to go all out and although the modern bungalows in the pictures look amazing, I'm now thinking I would probably prefer to keep it more traditional but smarten it up. The render looks ok at the front of the bungalow but is in a very poor state round the back where extensions have been done in the past so I am thinking of probably using an off white on a smooth render. I do fancy a sage green front and garage door! There is some planting to the right of the bungalow which I forgot to include in my original photos but definitely think I should do some more to soften it up.
