neighbour’s garden eyesore

Our next door neighbour has an old wooden leanto against the back of their house which is a bit of an eyesore. We have a 5’6” fence but you can still see it looming above the fence when we look out of our family room. We have a climbing rose growing up, but as they won’t let us attach anything to the side of their leanto as support, the rose can only climb to the top of our fence. We thought of adding some trellis to the top of our fence but I’ve read that the law says fences including trellis cannot exceed 6 feet. We’ve also ruled out any type of pleached trees as it’s too close to the house and we’ve had issues with tree roots before. We’re open to any ideas. The rose is lovely but could move if required. Just fed up with looking at it.

I think a piece of trellis on that first piece of fence would be good. You can train your rose up and along it. I would also let it clamber higher. Roses do have quite stiff branches so you wouldn’t need to tie it in. I have a similar issue and my neighbour has a window in hers. I’m growing an Japanese Maple in that spot and it will eventually reach 2.5m and cover a good portion of it.

You could move the Rose in winter, and plant a tall shrub instead? Cotinus is tall with lovely purple leaves, or try Fatsia japonica, bit of a beast but it will cover it.

Seeing just a glimpse of it I have a feeling you have a lovely garden.

I like Sonia’s idea to perhaps grow higher shrubs, but I actually like the way your fence looks currently with your rosebush.

Adding extra trellis would provide a bit more height but can possibly also look more fussy.

Neighbours’ buildings etc can arguably be an eyesore but I think it’s going to be tricky, if not impossible to do something about it.

Najeebah, the only planting that could possibly stay ( or is worth keeping) is the strip to the left of the stepping stones. I didn't plant it and I'm not the best with plants but it's mostly shrubbery that I've cut back considerably just to get a better idea of the space I am working with. It could form part of a backdrop to a seating area because that's where the last of the sun is - pretty sure we are south-west facing and that is generally when we would get the most use out of a seating area. Thanks for your other suggestions too. Going to try two sketches; one with two separate areas and one without to see the possibilities of both. If anyone has any other ideas for screening at the bottom of the garden that would be great. Even sitting at the dining table by the patio doors feels a little like being in a goldfish bowl - I'm not sure higher fencing or planting would solve this? Thanks again everyone for all your help. If you want your garden to be dominated by the new cabin then go for pale colours which will stand out. I would want it to look further away and would stain it black (or very dark grey) with grey deck around it which sets off the numerous greens in the garden really well. I would also Put a layer of planting in front of it so it creates a secondary area of garden. A simple block of tall grasses planted en masse for example. Gardens are the opposite of houses, adding rooms makes them feel bigger!

Thank you one and all for your suggestions, a good few things for us to think about. My apologies, I didn't really do a good job in explaining the style or anything! but the second image Carolina has suggested is the look and feel we would be going for. I really like the idea of using different materials and levels for the garden which we can achieve quite easily (I hope!) I have cleaned and stored all of the bricks from the chimney which was removed in the he house reno, and will be planning to build a flower bed, seat area along the left side (attached). I'm steering toward patio more so than decking especially given I can use the cover for the inspection chamber. Thanks for info on the cover guys! I am looking for low maintenance and have even considered adding (dare I say it) artificial turf. Better for slide tackling the kids! The idea of using diagonals is very clever and I shall give them some thought. Time to start sourcing materials and getting some quotes me thinks!

I love the shape of the rose would it be possible to build a pergola with a piece of trellis on the neighbours side and train your rose up and over the top, the trellis would be very solid having the support of a pergola (however small or shape fan, square, oblong) also it will add growing height to your garden with other climbers.

Love all these ideas. Hadn’t thought about a pergola. Or maybe even an arbour with a seat and the rose growing up and over the sides and top. Like the idea of a tree too but don’t want it to grow out too much into patio space so would have to look at trees with upright growing habits. Lots to ponder. Thanks everyone. 😊

I don’t suppose they’d let you paint that piece of wall?? If it’s in a dark colour it will just fade into the background (excuse the bad paint job!)
