Height of the railing

love it! What is the height of the railing? I was under impression that it should be at least 42” tall according to the CA building code. We would like to do stairs with 36 inch railing.

Much appreciated! Yes generally speaking, according to CA UBC your guard rail should be at least 42in at the flat walking surfaces (landings/balconies etc), and between 34in and 38in at the stair angle (from tread nose to top of rail). If you need any assistance: 877-997-8247.

How much are you able/ prepared to do on the stairs? You could have the steps re-tiled, or carpeted, laid with wood and a carpet runner, and you could install a new handrail if you have a larger budget. However, if you want to work with what you've got, I would focus on the tiles. I don't think the handrail itself is a problem- it could do with a lick of paint, but the tiles are a little dated. You can paint floor tiles but you'd need to be very careful to make sure that they were done safely to avoid slips on the stairs. Alternatively, you could have a stair runner fitted, to cover up most of the tiles, and then put some colourful artwork on the wall at the back to draw the eye upwards and away from the tiles. Just so you know, these parts are made on a tool called s spindle;e (small scale manufacturing). if you really really want to get the shape "just so" the supplier will be able to have a profile made for you, a new profile blade for a spindle machine will cost between £200 and £300. They may also have a minimum order OR they might ask you to pay a modest amount towards "set up time" (changing the blade over, etc.) I use Ternex in Welwyn for this sort of thing, their existing profiles can be seen here...https://www.flickr.com/photos/exploitspace/albums/72157669236158295

Thanks for the comments guys, there are no spindles under the bannister going up the stair as it is backed purely by wall. The trouble with not having a rail going up is what colour to paint that wall? Would it be top or bottom colour? If you look at pic 2, without the rail there is no barrier between the two on that wall... so the staircase would be a different colour on the left than on the right?
