How to improve my house exterior?
Comments (26)I agree, new front door, and some planting. The main problem is that everything is unrelieved red-brown! walls, windows, door, drive. Except the garage door, which then looks like a mistake! This is a common problem. You need to break up the brown. Render or cladding is probably overkill, there are more subtle solutions. Please don't put in an oak or stained timber door. It might look great in its own right, but will just be changing one brown for another! A painted timber (or composite) door would be best, with the garage door painted to match. Choose a shade of grey or green, avoid red and purple, as you need a good contrast to the brick. Ideally change the windows to cream, or grey-green, but if not, try the shutters. They are a bit 1960s, but might actually suit the style of this house! Painted to match the doors. Consider taking up some small areas of paving near the house to allow planting to create a break between the brick drive and the brick house!...See MoreIdeas needed to improve exterior please - porch & windows! :)
Comments (4)I think it's safe to say that the crux of the matter is the 80's extension roof. If you're going to the trouble of a new extension then the roof needs to go and then both bits tied in properly. The doorway through to the back garden is too close to the Front door, and the roof is larger than that of the front door. They at the very least need to be identical sizes, or preferably under one roof the same pitch and proportions as that of the garage. The porch needs to be grander and centralised. I'm no expert plan drawer by any means, but i did a mock up of what i had in mind, the rest would be down to the architect and budget....See MoreHow could I improve the front of this house?
Comments (9)I like Kerry Bryan’s first photo. I’m thinking maybe a hip to gable dormer window conversion above the garage with two dormer windows. Replace red tiles with black. Then stone cladding and white render with grey windows, not sure which stone yet or where. Not sure yet how to tackle the right side of the house and feel the window positions don’t look right...See MoreImproving appearance of house exterior
Comments (15)Hi :-) I'm blushing, because of Karen from OnePlan's comment :-) But here goes: fairly simple and I'm guessing not too expensive would be changing the front door for a modern (oak) one, adding a modern awning above the front door, and painting the pebble dash a warm white, improving the path to the front door and painting the red brick retaining wall a dark grey (same as stairs) or white. I would also add planting. At some point in the future I'd change the trellis below the decking for a more modern version with vertical or horizontal slats and replace the railing with a glass version or a metal version (but I'm not sure if that is allowed by building regulations in the UK because of the horizontal steel wires)....See MoreDavid M
